smog pump for CA cars

Does anyone know if a smog pump from a '75 will fit a '79SC? Mine is binding and shredding belts. Is the smog pump pulley supposed to turn with little resistance? When I turn mine by hand, it's smooth for a couple of turns then binds a half or so turn then smoothens out again. Is that normal?

you can still drive the car without a smog pump right? i mean while the belt is shredded and you are in the process of getting one.

I've read mixed comments about driving the car with the belt off. I don't know for sure. If someone knows the answer, please chime in.

Cool

generally it's OK to drive the car with the pump disconnected.

the only issue I have ever read about is that if you have Thermal Reactors.. then the added pump airflow will keep the Thermal Reactors, thus the heads, cooler.

ditto..
but I had the 3 in 1 tubes instead of the reactors.. it was a real constipated exhaust flow.

Go ahead and take the whole thing off, it won't hurt a thing and will only give you more room and less weight. I have 2, one for the 2.7 and one for the 3.2, both look and fit the same and are only used once every two years (smog). Personally I think the car goes faster without it on but it could be several other things.

You will need it to pass the visual portion of the California smog check.

county? was it the dyno roller test? did they ask about the cat not being on it? or were the heat exchangers mistaken? i have heard that a numb tech may mistake the exchangers for a cat.
