Ignition - MSD Time

My old ignition box is starting to give up on me! I just completed a tune up including a valve job, installing new plugs, new cap, new rotor, new plug wires, new points, new oil, new filters and I am still having trouble getting enough advance, so it’s MSD time. I believe the MSD may also give me better performance where the Sporto lacks, under the 3000 RPM range. The Sporto trans allows some slippage under 2700 or 2800 RPM and when the engine is cold you can get some bogging. I will let all (5) of you Sporto owners know what happens

Here’s the plan:
1. Clean up the (rats nest) wiring in engine compartment
2. Run new wires and MSD harness. At the same time remove and label unused equipment and old wires and put them safely away in a box
3. Install MSD 6420 6AL, in place of old ignition box
4. Install the MSD coil, which one?
5. Install Tach adapter #8910
5. Install 8.5 mm Magnecore plug wires

Any suggestions or comments? What coil should I use, I would like to use a MSD coil? Any good wire/electrical supply shops in So Cal?

BD;
Here are a bunch of threads about MSD. I know that I have posted on least one of them the MSD wiring diagram that I used for my '69. I don't have the 911 wiring diagram in front of me, but hopefully the installation into a '69E won't be too different from your car.

BTW, I know that you just put a new points, but if it were my I'd put in an optical or magnetic pick-up to replace the points. You'll set it up once and never touch it again. In my case I've got a Crane set-up which I just never ever touch.

About Crane Optical Ignition
Quote:
NOTE: In order to have an operational tachometer, you'll need to get a later style Porsche Electronic Tach.

Is this true, what about the MSD unit and it's tach adapter? Whats your set up John?

No, not true.... I'm running a Crane XR700 and standard tachometer. Best engine mod I've made.

I've also got the Crane XR700 and (had) the original '69E tach work fine. I've since replaced it with an early (w/ Silver hub) 10000 RPM tach and sold the original.

I posted a schematic of my set-up on this thread.

Another question, can I mount the coil in the orginal location on the side wall or should it be mounted to the fan? Which coil are you using?

The PO for my car mounted the coil to a vertical bracket he made over by left rear corner of the engine bay, and that is where it has stayed to this day.

As long as the wire reaches, you can mount the coil anywhere that you'd like.
