Fuel Pump Fuse Popped

On Sunday afternoon heading home from an AX, the fuse to the fuel pump popped. I put a new one in, and the car started right up and I got home with no more issues.

I have had the car for 3 years and this is the first issue I have had. I did a search on this topic and didn't find an explanation on why the fuse might blow.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is this a possible symptom that the pump itself might be going bad? Could the relay the fuse feeds be going bad?

Any significant increase in resistance within the circuit could cause the fuse to blow. Yes, it could be an indication of a failing fuel pump as, many times, worn bearings can cause increased amperage draw which will cause the fuse to pop. First, however, check and clean all connections from the the fuse (including the fuse terminals) to the pump as these can also cause increased resistance. If still concerned, connect a multimeter to the circuit and measure the amperage draw from the pump and see if it's in spec (after cleaning all connections, including the grounds.) Doubtful the relay is a problem but do touch it and see if it feels hot.

+1 Did this just a few weeks ago on my 81. Mine was at 8 amps. Tony (boyt911sc) suggests checking draw at the fuel pump but I did my test at the fuse panel.

From the little I read, six-ish amp draw means the fuel pump is just a pup and ten/ten+ amps means it is getting long in the tooth and should be replaced.

FWIW and a spec off topic - Mine has been squealing like a pig lately at the "mature" amp draw of eight. there are other reasons for the noise that are discussed in other posts but I am going to clean the connections first and re-test.
