to shim or not to shim rear brake pads?
My old ones came out shimless. The new ones (MetalMaster from PP) come with shims.
I want to have the best brakes for the track. Do I put the shims or do I keep them out? I am leaning towards installing them, they will help shield the heat, even if they conduct well, they are one extra layer ... Let me know, need to get them broken in tonight! ![]() George |

Well, they are in. Off to the break in. Of course, I can take them out in 5 mins. if you guys think that's better ... Let me know!

And speaking of - any quick advice for my first brake pad replacement? (I just now ordered the MetalMaster along with four Brake pad sensors - I've never done disk brakes before. Do I need to bleed?) (the brakes, not my knuckles)
Thanks

brakes are really easy. Do you have the 101 projects book? Get it. It has a very comprehensive writeup about the job. You may also find a tech article here on PP. There is no bleeding necessary. You can literally do the job in 10 minutes per axle.

Ed:
Interesting input. My local friends recommended the MetalMaster pads as the best bang for the buck, that's why I went with them. Can't fail at $20 a set. Did your last set just use up quickly or did it perform crappy on top of that? Since this is the rear and the front has plenty of meat left (70%), I am not too worried for this weekend.
