Will 6 x 9's fit in the rear deck or do you need to buy aftermarket deck?

Thanks--I just bought some 5 1/4's for the rear deck but if I can get some slim mount 6x9's in there without buying a new deck I'll do it. TIA

They will fit, but you will need to cut a larger hole in the deck itself, and then the area beneath the deck, and also remove some of the stuffing.

I put 6.5" Blaupunkt speakers in the back, and had to cut through the rubber membrane so the deck panel wouldn't ride up so high when I put it back together.

I also stapled in some new carpet pad as insullation around the speakers to help with the bass, and it sounds awesome now.

Sorry for the confusion--yes I'm talking about speakers. I may try and take the rear deck off tomorrow and see how much room is back there. Thanks for the suggestions. (when I was 'kicking it for the afternoon crowd' I was bumping post back to top since I wasn't getting much of a response) Thanks all

You don't really have any depth without building a new panel. Remember the metal rear deck is right above the engine so do not cut! (I have seen it done!) Ideally the rear speakers are for fill, you want your sound to come from in front of you so I would suggest better front speakers and perhaps more power
(I am assuming volume is what you are after since 6X9's and sound quality can't be used in the same sentence)

For now I have some Alpine 5 1/4's scheduled to be installed in the rear. I have Alpine 6 1/2" components in the doors and will upgrade to a 350 watt 4 channel Kicker amp all controlled by an Alpine head unit. This should be a big improvement over my 10yr old Kenwood amp which is driving the door speakers now. I'll see how this setup sounds then I need to figure out which sub setup to use.

Right now I don't have any speakers in the back of my 73, but when I purchased the car, the previous owner had some cheap speakers that had their own plastic case. The speakers sat on top of the rear deck. The speakers didn't look too bad, but they were cheap speakers (Jensen I think) that were dry rotted.

I don't know if similar speakers are made; might not be a bad option if you could purchase quality ones...

might be worth investigating the flat panel type speakers...

to repeat a post above -- the rear is just for fill so you should filter out the bass and mid-bass at or before the amp.

I'd say don't even bother with rears. Spend the $$ on an Infinity Basslink for the trunk and use all the amp power for the separates in the doors. Thats what I did and it sounds great.

Can you give more info on the mounting of the Infinity Basslink in the trunk. I'm in the market as well. Any photos?

Cheers,

Geoff

Don't misunderstand -- I am not saying the door shold not be used. I am talking about using rear deck speakers as additional limited-range, fill speakers. they help quite a bit esp. when there is wind noise.
