sunroof not working

My sunroof on my 1980 911SC will only open about 1 inch. It will close back fine. I asume it is a cable (I have Wayne's book), but what side do I need to replace?
Thank you.

When the cables are bad you'll hear a noise like gears grinding as the drive gear skips over the cable.

You might need to take the headliner portion of the sunroof down to get a better look at the cable and lifting mechanism. Mine would jam (82SC) while being opened because one of the plastic lifting pieces had broken. I replaced the cable on one side with an updated one from Pelican. (the updated one is all that is available and needs to be ground a bit with a dremel to fit correctly) In terms of Porsche fixes, this is pretty much a bargain but takes a little patience. Good luck, Chuck

Several areas to check:

the cables
A small drive gear inside the gearbox
the rubber clutch
