Difference between a 74S and a non S?

I know they're both 2.7 CIS motors but is there a HP difference. If not HP, what is different?

svandamme 03-13-2004 02:06 PM

25 hp more on the S

Yellowbird RS 03-13-2004 03:30 PM

External oil cooler, different camshafts, more compression, etc, etc...

Thanks for the info, that answers it. I started digging through some of my old P-car books and found that the regular 74 came with only 143HP  I drove one today and it didn't seem that weak. Anybody know if carbs and good exhaust would liven it up much?

bigchillcar 03-13-2004 04:16 PM

8:1 compression vs. 8.5:1 on the 'S' model...intake is slightly larger on the 'S' and as mentioned the cam have slightly different overlap. Both have the 7:31 ring and pinion which tends to make this year model quicker than later ones with 8:31 and the same displacement.

I've driven mine and an 'S' model and found mine to be quicker off the line, but the 'S' a little stronger as you get higher up in the gears and power band...just an observation though...this was a subjective comparison.

retrosc,
the stock exhaust on the '74 is already one of the most desireable of the 911 series...it has an awesome note, especially in the 4k range...let off the gas just above this and listen to that brooooooooooommmmm!

if you like daily reliability/driveability like i do with mine, as that's how mine is used...stick with CIS, if you wanna play on weekends mostly or track the car, you can tweak more out of MFI or carbs...then you can go to rs cam/pistons setup and see more like 210 hp...of course, compression is going to be around 10:1, so keep that in mind...

Yeah, it did sound pretty good. I have to wonder what carbs would do without any internal engine mods.

My owner's manual shows:
'74 911-top spd 130 mph, 0-61 mph 8.5, hp net SAE 143, gross 167@5700
'74 S--top spd 140 mph, 0-61 mph 7.6 , hp net SAE 167, gross 195@5800
'74 Carrera--top spd 148 mph, 0-61 mph 6.3, hp net SAE 200, gross 230@6300

fintstone,
take the owner's manual figures with a large salt grain...my stock '74 still runs 0-60 times just under 7 seconds. you'll find a wide variety of figures for this year of car...i've got car & driver and road & track issues from '74...one of them has it in the 6's as well. my understanding is that the factory published numbers were conservative for a reason...

I can't imagine what '74 Carrera is being refered to in that owners manual; The U.S. Carrera was identical to the "S" drivetrain in '74, and the Euro (ROW) was 210 DIN HP, AFIK. Those do sound like factory performance figures for the MFI/ROW Carrera though. Is your car, (or owners manual), a euro model?

Just posting data from the manual. My '74 was pretty quick with the 2.7 too although nothing like now with a well prepped 3.0.
Denis
Both my car and owner's manual are US. The manual lists the Carrera as same bore, stroke, diplacement, compression ratio as the "S" with mechanical fuel injection instead of CIS.

The '74 is probably the most maligned (for no reason) and underrated 911 ever built. It was capable of faster times than many of the posted reports. The car was quite light, and had the very cool "early style" little bumperette impact bumpers.

The heart of the beast was not the engine - who cares about the engine - as most 0-60 times varied only about a second between the ROW and US model. What made the machine was the ring and pinion. :)

Hmmm, that's odd. Your manual is describing the (not available in the U.S.), Euro Carrera for '74. There was also a U.S. model that year, but it was CIS and 167 HP.

fintstone 03-14-2004 09:26 AM

I don't think they printed different manuals for US and non US..only versions in English, German, French, etc.

Yellowbird RS 03-14-2004 10:22 AM

That’s correct cis 167 hp and yes they printed different manuals for US and non they use to change hp for kw, miles for km and of course the language

fintstone 03-14-2004 11:07 AM

I guess it is possible that my manual may be row, but it is in english, every time it mentions anything in miles, fareheit, psi etc, it converts it to metric in parens (km, c, atm, liters, etc) so there is no need to print multiple copies. The speedo pictured is graduated is in miles.
So you have one that is marked "for US cars only" or that is different than mine?
