Mystery Foam Tube

What does this foam tube do, there's one on each side? It's empty, is it for the rear defroster? Can I remove it?

OK its the tubes for the rear window vents. Defroster became electric in 69, so I am assuming these tubes are just for 65-68 911's. Anyone know if the foam is factory?

Isn't that the original foam protection for the box it was delivered in way back in '68?
