New Paint Job

Thinking of getting '85 Targa painted this spring. Have alot of little pit/rock spots on front of car. Also, a small area along bottom of back window seal where paint is chipped and it is starting to rust (car was painted by PO). I know there are lots of different ways to go when it comes to paint jobs, but that's about all I know about it. Any suggestions? Also, for you Atlanta folks, where is a GOOD place to go?

I like Georgia Paint and Body in Suwanee (770-932-0742). The owner is Brian Holtz...a great guy who does excellent work. Feel free to tell him I sent you. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

Autoglo in Norcross is one of the best shops in the city and they are fair! Mostly do Mercedes but can do anything. Give Ted a buzz...

Hot Wheels in Marietta. call John at 770.422.8412. At any given time there is at least 5-6 Porsches in there. A little on the slow side sometimes, but awesome quality with average pricing.

Just curious. I'm in California. What kind of prices are they
charging in Atlanta for a paint job? I am assuming this is
a complete windows off type of paint job.

Went to Sports and Imports today to get an estimate. They said that they only do collision work. Referred me to Budget Auto Painting on Buford Hwy in Chamblee. Their estimate was $5900. Includes: dissmantle, basecoat clearcoat paint job, colorsand & buff, replace misc clips & hardware, replace back glass seal, rubber channel, gasket, and molding. He said he would strip the hood and front bumper ( possibly doors also ) and sand down the rest as necessary. Doors need minor body work for dents and dings. Front valence, and right rocker panel also to get minor body work and left rocker panel to be replaced. Estimated job would take 4-5 weeks and could start on it any time. Comments?

In California, about 10 years ago, I got a similar paint job for around $3500. That was supposed to be a pretty good deal. My mechanic says now days expect to pay about $10K!

After reading the written estimate here at home I realized I never asked what kind of paint they were planning on using. What kind do I want? Also, thanks for the suggestions on shops. I read some old threads and got Sports and Imports name.

For my car, I asked for Sikkens. I think it is german. I really wanted Glasurit which I think is also german. But I was afraid they would not pay for it.

After reading some old posts on paint jobs I have one more question. Is colorsanding the same as wet sanding?

Here's the final product. In addition to the work mentioned before, replaced front windshield. Final cost was $6696.

Color sanding is done wet with very fine (1500 to 2000) paper. Wet sanding is done on primer also. It makes the paper clog less.

The question of origin came up for Sikkens and Glasurit (aka Glasso)

Basically Sikkens started back in 1792 and was based in the Netherlands. They now have plants throughout Europe.
Sikkens History....

Glasurit started out in 1888 in Hamburg Germany. In 1965 it was aquired by BASF but remained, for the most part, in Germany
Glasurit history:

Both excellent paints in my opinion. My preference is for Glasurit but I'd be happy with most modern, high quality paint.

So Kirk, what shop ended up doing your paint job?
