Designing a trailer tire rack. How much clearance do I need to park under the tires?
My car is not local to me right now and I am doing some rough sketches so I can buy material.
Can someone measure the height off the ground for the front fenders? Basically, if you lay a bar across the front fenders, how high is the bar off the ground. An estimate as to how high the headlights are off the ground would work too. -Chris

Chrisp,
Interesting question! I laid a long broomstick across a 79SC and a 81 930 at the point where the headlight rings meet the fenders. the measurement to the top edge of the broomstick was 31" on the SC and 31-1/2" on the 930. I also laid the broomstick across the bottom of the windshield resting the broomstick on the windshield wiper posts. The measurement was 35-1/4" on the SC and 35-1/2" on the 930. These cars may be slightly lowered. I would guess you would want to make the bottom of the rack at least 36" off the surface of the trailer, this would allow some adjustment of car placement on the trailer. JoeF |

Chrisp,
Keep me posted on your progress. I am interested in building a rack for my trailer as well. I ran into somebody at A DE in Watkins Glenn who had adapted a Trailex spare tire rack to his aluminum trailer (not a Trailex). He had the rack bolted on to his trailer and mentioned that he had unbolted the rack and shortened the uprights a couple of times till he had it the way he wanted it. I thought this was a good idea. It might be nice to have the rack removeable or at least adjustable height wise in case you have to hual something other than a 911. JoeF |

Joe F thanks for all of the measurements. This is exactly what I needed. I will most certainly share pics and thoughts on the end result.
I am building a removable (bolt-on) rack that not only is it removable but it should be somewhat universal. I am using materials from work that we use for other stuff like this (not auto applications) and maybe offer it as a product for public consumption. It will be a bolt together design (UPS Shipable) and utilizes anodized aluminum tubing and high strength composite joints. I will update with pics as to what I have done. It may take a few weeks as the trailer is in RI and the car is in CT. -Chris

Chrisp,
Here is a second guess on that 36" hieght suggestion for the bottom of the rack. Maybe a few more inches clearence may be needed to allow for bouncing of suspension of the car while it is in transit. Good Luck! JoeF |
