Starter Problem

My starter sometimes turns over and sometimes doesn't. It finally will crank after jimmying the key back and forth after a failure.

I've replaced the starter with a rebuilt unit- wasted money as it still has the same phenomenon.
I've replaced the starter switch - wasted money since it starter still fails.

The battery is new from last March- starter still fails

I did the cheap stuff first- Polishing all grounds and terminals in the engine bay, starter, trunk and transmission ground strap (it's new)

I hear the fuel pump purr when turning the key to start. The terminals jive with the Bentley diagram on the back of the starter.

It's got me pretty ticked as I rebuilt my engine and it's not very impressive to jink with the starter.

Anyone had a the same gremlin? I thought I had it fixed before the teardown.

I have to add that I also checked voltages to the yellow wire at the starter and it was 11.7v.

The voltage may be marginal. I would test with an Ohm meter to see what kind of resistance is in that wire. I know I had to replace my yellow wire, it showed continuity, and carried 12+ volts, but the resistance values were way off, it would not carry the proper current when trying to crank at all times, sometimes it would sometimes it would not even make a click, I replaced the entire yellow wire from switch to the terminal on starter, have not had a no cranking problem since, has been about 4 yrs now. Good luck.

I would try the electrical part of ignition switch. I had the problem of starter would not disengage, so I replaced starter with a rebuilt
Did not fix so ordered new electrical switch from Pelican.
