Help with exhaust selection

I have a 77 Targa with original exchangers and exhaust or so it seems. The muffler is rusted. I have spent the last 6 mos. repairing minor items and working on the injection leaks. Now it is time for the exhaust. I have what sounds like a volkswagon on steroids at idle. This bugs me somewhat and I want to make sure this is not a symptom of something else other than the rust bag sitting where my muffler should be.

I plan on replacing the exchangers with SSIs like Jim has done (Great pics by the way). At the same time I want to replace the rusting hulk of metal weighing down the rear of my fine auto. Looking for a throaty sounds but not extremely loud.

What I am looking for is sound files and recommendations on exhausts for my toy. Info for purchasing SSIs and mufflers would be most appreciated. I have looked at PP (they get most of my money now) , Ebay (Motormeisters), Performance and few other web sites I have forgotten. I like the look of the Triad systems posted earlier. I have a dual in single out now but would love to hear opinions on dual in dual out as for as sound and performance. I assume dual in dual out would require mods to the rear valance. What are the options there? Buy new valance or mod the one I have? Let me hear what you have done and guide me down the path of performance and good reverbs off neighboring homes in the morning air!

I would rather pound my balls flat with a wooden mallet than give MM any money. Do a search.

I really like the Dansk center out sport muffler. Chuck Moreland has it on his 73, and it sounds great, not as loud as I expected for a car with no sound insulation. Here is a pc, shamelessly lifted from one of Wayne's competitors.

You will have to remove/modify your valance. Rennspeed sells a replacement fiberglass valance that you can cut where the pipes need to go.

Another option is to modify your existing muffler, by removing some of the baffles, and making it dual out. Here are instructions from and old Pano:

This has also been the topic of several past threads.

I don't think he can modify his existing muffler. It seems as though it is rusted out and probably has a fairly loud tone. There might not be anything left to weld to.I know I had a tired OEM muffler on a '77 and I liked the way it sounded. But it was gutted by rust.

BTW, the home brew sport, which I have now, has a very deep resonance and tends to be a bit raspy sounding at WOT. Campbellcj's Dansk sport is somewhat the same. While it sounds great, it can split your eardrums if you are next to it when he lauches out of the pits at the track.

If I were you, I'd want to know more about the Monty.

After reading a few threads, I kind of get that impression. I just need to find a reasonable priced set. Either that or just replace the muffler for now.

Ok. Have the link to Rennspeed. I'll check it out as an option. Thanks.

So did your tired OEM muffler sound like a VW? Mine does and I growing tired. I'm assuming it is the muffler with all the threads about rivets and holes in others mufflers. I don't know much about the exhaust system but I am getting ready to dive in.
