Okay,

In talking with my wrench today, he said the S-03 and AVS-Sports were more tire then I needed.

He recommends the Yokohama AVS-ES100, what are people thoughts. It is for a 84 Carrera with 16x7 fronts and 16x8 rears, only street driving.

Michael, I tend to agree that these maximum performance tires seem a bit overkill for normal street driving. I just put a set of Kumho 712's on my 86 Carrera and I really like them, but I drive my car quite hard at times and I still can't imagine ever exceeding the limits of the Kumhos. When I was shopping, it came down to the Kumhos, Yoko AVS Sports, or Pirelli PZeros. I knew they'd all be outstanding, so I went with the Kumhos because they were significantly less expensive than the others. I've heard nothing but good things about the ES100's though, and they are a great bargain too. I'm sure you'd be quite satisfied with any of the high performance tires out there for street driving.

I like Dave's reply, and couldn't agree more. With apologies to the guys that just have to have SO3's or Sports or whatever is the "very best", 99% of them will never approach the capabilities of these tires on the street. A couple things to keep in mind, 1) if you look at the handling ratings of the top 20 tires on Tirerack, from best to worst, they're only separated by a few points, 2) tire technology has come a long way, the average sedan tire today is better than the performance tire that originally came on your car. Actually, for my daily driver, I'm more interested in all around street performance (including in the rain) than in which tire has the ultimate track performance. Like Dave I'm using (and am quite satisfied with) the Kumho 712's, but I, also, have heard very good things about the ES-100's.

On the street you'll probably never see the performance limits but there are those people who will be driving their car to DE events where you might actually explore those limits.

The other problem with upper end performance tires is that they are softer, and wear much faster. It's money down the drain if you aren't taking them to their limits.

Great tire for the street. I have them on my NARP 944.

Yesterday I autocrossed a friend's 968 with ES 100's and was suprized how much wheelspin I was getting on the inside exiting corners. The car simply has more torque than the lowly 944, and I usually autocross the Quaifed 911. Limited slip is a good thing when autocrossing.

I had good results with the Kumho 712s (got 15K miles out of the rears), but replaced them with AVS ES100s based on some reports of the 712 having qc issues. So far so good with the Yokos, although I think I picked up a screw or nail in one of my rear tires :(

So not to hijack the thread, but how many people trust a plugged/repaired Yoko? I've only got about 2K miles on the tires...

I would trust a well done repair. This would be where they remove the tire and remount/rebalance

Repaired tires are fine for street driving.

They are not for going through turn one at 140 mph.

If you're concerned about the repair, have a shop do an internal patch repair. The internal patch is more reliable than the external poke-the-sticky-rope repair.

I did an autocross with an internally patched BFG Comp T/A ZR on my old Mustang Cobra and had no problems. Not saying i'd recommend it. Just saying I did it.................. :p

I agree on the tire overkill issue. Tires like Kumhos (MX or 712, i'd go with the MX hands down) or Yoko ES100 are plenty good for general street use. Michelin or Pirelli for riding around town is money down the drain if you ask me. The occasional DE or track day would be a different story.
