Quick Alternator Question
I'm just making sure on this.....
I'm re-installing the alternator on the engine and I didn't label where the wires went.... The plug in is a no-brainer. I have a red wire with a ring terminal and a black wire with a larger ring terminal. I think the red wire goes to B+ and the black wire goes to DF. But, the ring terminals seem to be reversed from a size standpoint... Which is why I'm getting a re-check before I hook everything back up. James |
Which car?
If it's the SC I might be of some help, on the others it would just be a guess. On my car (1980) B+ is battery, red, hot powered. DF (or +61) is dark blue or maybe black, hard to tell exactly. It is on top middle between B+ and D-. D- is brown. green on my car was a spade connection so I didn't really pay attention to how it was labeled, there was only one place for it to go. It was in the lower middle and was connected to the brushes. You can verify easily enough if you have an external voltage regulator. On mine DF on the voltage regulator was clearly labeled, you can use a milti-meter to check continuity to the wires and make sure which one is right. Hooking things up backwards can be really expensive. green on my car was a spade connection so I didn't really pay attention to how it was labeled, there was only one place for it to go. |

B+ (at least two, maybe three fat red wires-- two go to the engine wire harness and one goes through the grommet at the forward edge of the engine tin to the starter) B- (fat brown wire. goes to the engine wire harness) D+/61 (thin blue wire, the one we have been talking about) DF (thin black wire, "Dynamo Field" or the field wire, used to supply field excitation current once the alternator is putting out voltage) also there is a ground strap from the case to one of the ground post. hope this helps. |
Darn. I was going to get up this morning and correct the mistake in my post but unfixed beat me to it.
+61 is D+ (dynamo positive) and not DF (dynamo field). Red, what year and model alternator is that? Is it internal or externally regulated? My SC does not have a large plastic connection like that. |
1969 "T". I'm putting the 914/6 engine back together.
The 914/6 shop manual doesn't show the wiring and of course there is no wiring diagram. The 911 wiring diagram is confusing, since I have 2 wires and a connector and the 911 shows 4 wires... Externally regulated |

you can actually see the difference in size on teh wires.. and on the connector.. simply match the sizes and you're done ! |

I would not put any power through anything until you are certain which wire is which. Unfixed is correct, for an external reg there are four: B+ (red) D- (Ground, brown and strap to case) D+/61 (blue, pre-excitation current) and DF (black, Dynamo field, connects to 1/4" male faston connector on the brush holder). Go to the voltage regulator, wherever it is mounted. Follow the wires from the connector plug all the way to the alternator. On the VR plug, or on the bottom of the VR, there should be a code conforming to the above that tells you which terminal is which. If it goes into a wire loom, then get out a voltmeter or test light, you must identify which wire is which. Gotta get them right, otherwise no charge, or worse =fire! Good luck. |
