Red face need help from some one rebuilding a post 77 915

I am still struggling with the stack heights of my two merged trani's.

I think I have finally have a lead on the problem. If there is someone with a post 1977 915 who has it apart and can measure the height of the operating sleeve hubs both input shaft and pinion shaft.

bentley book part on input shaft number 12 page 350-2 and pinion shaft part number 7 page 350-4

thanks in advance

Jim

My input shaft is still together but I need more on what you want measured?

Unfortunately my pinion stack is fully disassembled.

Damomma,

You are the man, I needed someone with the pinion shaft apart to be able to do this right!

I have attached a few pictures which show the part and the measurement I need take.

Hope a picture is worth a thousand words.

I am hoping that yours is about 2mm taller than mine, if so the puzzle is solved.

thanks

Jim

Jim,

Both the early and late 1st/2nd slider hubs are 17mm (nom) thickness.
The 3rd/4th slider hub is 20mm (nom)

Regards

Hayden

thanks again to Hayden of Wevo, I have finally solved my trani problem(s). It started with this problem

input shaft too tall

which was brought on because I was swapping a 7:31 pinion from a mag case 915 to an AL case 915.

I decided to go with a locked rear end,

locked or quaife

then I ran into the problem described in this thread.

Now I have a solution to all of the above problems, it seems that the bearing under the nut on the inputshaft ( the flywheel side N206E ) is the same diameter as the bearing that goes on the top of the pinion shaft (shifter side, non flywheel side N2206E) however they are not the same.

The proper inputshaft bearing and the is about 3 mm shorter than the pinion shaft bearing. So when I got them mixed, the input shaft nut would not go on all the way but it still fit in the trani and seemed to work fine. The pinion shaft with the wrong bearing manifests itself as the stack coming up short so 5th gears dog teeth hit its mate on the input shaft.

My problem was amplifed because the input shaft was in one trani and the pinion shaft was in the other.

I will again thank all those who contibuted to my resolution

jim
