voltmeter panel for console?

I'd like to put a voltmeter right under the two horizontal air conditioning controls in the console of my 82 SC. Ideally, I would like to make a flat panel of some type to accept the 2" gauge. I saw the one that 9Xauto carries, but I don't want the handles, lights, toggle switches, etc. that this panel has. A single gauge bracket would be easy enough, but I wanted something that looks more integrated. Has anyone made their own custom panel? Pics and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I cut a piece of acrylic plastic to fit the hole and covered it in material that matches what is on my dash. I glued in wood blocks in the lower corners to run the screws into. The top is attached to the existing panel that is held in with screws from the side. Mine isn't too subtle, but it fits my style. Nice to have the volt meter. I also added an extra power outlet for radar detector, fuse holder, etc.

Steve, that is a great setup! Tell me more about what the switches do. And where did you get the gauge?

Steve,

I picked up the gauge at VIP (just a cheapy). The switch below it turns on the light in the gauge. It saved me from having to run a separate wire from the dash lights. The red switches run the fuel pump, extra interior lighting, and one spare for future ideas. I wired the whole thing up with a nice 6 pin plug (for a trailer I think) that goes through the carpet into the tunnel. This way when I need to remove the console, I can just unplug the harness.

I was tempted to go with the fake carbon fiber look switch covers just because they would go with the basket weave vinyl. The red ones just looked meaner. The red switches were about $10 each at Auto Zone.
