Typical banter. I used to have an '85 944 and although it was a nice car (and a real Porsche), it just isn't the same as my 911. The 911 feels like an extension of my body - the 944 was just a car.

951s are quick, no doubt. So is a Z06 Corvette. I still don't feel the need to own one.

For the most part they seemed to be pretty logical about the comparison. Well, with the exception of what Eric picked up on.

I bought a 1986 951 new and liked it quite a bit until the warranty ran out! I had a number of used 911,s with the last one about 10 years earlier (1970 T). I liked the neutral handling and working air.I had 2 clutch assemblies and an exhaust header replaced before 35000km. The cam belt broke at 47600 km 400 km before the first scheduled inspection. Porsche split the repair bill with me. I traded it on a low mileage ,86 911 Cab . I found the 911 to be a much more visceral ride and felt better driving it anywhere anytime.Louder rougher probably no faster but felt like it was . I did nothing other than oil changes until about 100000 km . I then put in a clutch ,a valve adjustment pads and rear tires and then confidently proceded to do 100000 again .I sold it about 6 years ago, missed it ever since and recently bought a 1980 SC. I imagine the 951 is worth about 1/3 what the same year /condition 911 is now and I bet it has cost it,s subsequent owner(s) much more . But the air works better (if still working at all)

Let's face it, the 911 is THE hot rod of the P-car world. It's flat six is kinda like chevy's smallblock, virtually interchangeable from year to year making things like 3.6 or 3.3 turbo swaps into early cars possible. Then there's tranny, brake and suspension swaps plus a ton of aftermarket stuff. I have two favorite cars, the Ford Mustang (except 74-78) and the Porsche 911. Both are fun to drive and have interesting handling. Funny thing is the 911 really reminds me of the go-carts I built as a kid and I've really learned to use it's "weaknesses" to my advantage, I just love cars that you can steer with the gas pedal. I've driven 944's and they just don't put the grins on my face like a 911 or a Mustang. There is nothing like the feeling of a perfect 4 wheel drift in a 911 to get the blood flowing! Besides I just help a buddy do a clutch job in a 944 and after that "terrific" experience you can rest assured I'll NEVER own one.

I had a 944...for two months and sold it! Fast...NO I will say the car was simple to drive, but just not fun.
