Porsche Crest Help my bro. by his first Porsche

My (40 year old) younger brother has always been a car guy and is a very good driver. Recently, a friend took him out for a DE day in a 993 and now he's hooked on the 911 idea.

Anyway, bro. found what he thinks might be a clean '72 T at a remarkable price but with one small problem. The gas tank's been out of the car for the last couple of months for a yet to be done recondition. The seller is moving out of the country and the sale has to go down NOW.

Bro's. question to me was, is there a safe way to jerry rig a fuel supply for a short test drive / PPI?

All '72 T guys chime in.

Safe way ? No Can it be done and trusted yes . Just use an outboard boat fuel tank and modify the hose. Pump it ten times or so and the fuel pump should take over from there. Be sure to cap the return fuel line from the engine (two lines go to the tank just like your SC). However im sure there will be another reason not to drive the car anyway . Brakes , oil leaks , and better yet the lack of vehicle insurance is probable. Do you have a towing company to use ? Thats the only "safe" way to do it.

I'd be suspicious of that car. The owner probably didn't put the tank back in because he doesn't want anyone to drive it for some reason. Or worse, doesn't want anyone to find out it doesn't run. Since he's leaving the country, he knows you'll never find him again.

Even if you could figure out a way to drive it without the tank, you're asking for trouble. I would advise not to buy any car in pieces and without a PPI.

Unless of course the car is worth much more in pieces than the purchase price. That way you are covered either way.

Be patient, some people look for the right car for 10-12 months.

Philip, the problem with your advise is that the good ones dont stay for sale for 12 months . They normally sell in 2 days . Aside from that if I had someone hassling me for 10-12 months on a car I was selling I would tell um to take a hike and dont come back . We cant be talking about more than 5k for this 72` T .

Actually, we're talking less than 3k. I almost told him offer 2.5 as is and worst case he'll part it out for more than that.

The point of my previous post was to remind Jamie that often times it's hard not to get overly excited about a car for sale. Buyers should be disicplined and patient or may end up buying the wrong car. There is no reason to rush a transaction like buying a 30 year old car!

This line: "The seller is moving out of the country and the sale has to go down NOW." is not an uncommon sales tatic. Along with "someone else is very interested". If you allow someone else to control the pace of the transaction he'll end up with the better end.

It just seems ridiculous to jerry rig a gas tank for a PPI. Why deal with the headache? A little fishy too.

Keep looking and you'll find the one. There are lots of cars for sale and plenty of resources to located them with.

Good luck

Jamie,
Round up some other Pelicans to take a look at it for him. A bunch of eyes may be able to help with a decent eval even if he can't drive it.

Put me next on the list. For that price, I'd take a serious look at it myself.

Jamie,

What Mark said.

If he's local I'd be glad to help out any way I can....FWIW, I've been through JW's "bring a sharp poking device and look here for rust" program (very informative BTW).

Of course that would require a lift...or a very small head, which I don't have.

BTW, regards from Paul E.

Marc

Wait a sec...the car is clean (aside from the AWOL gas tank) but the seller is asking only 3k? Run as fast as you can away from this car!

For $3K, I'd buy running or not if it wasn't a rustbusket.

If it's in decent condition, running or not, buy it, 2.5K is a steal. If it doesn't run, sell off the engine for parts and buy a 3.0 for 3-4K, you'll have a rocket of a car for what most people (me) spend for an ok driver.
