swepco testimony, it worked for me

I've read the debates on what tranny oil to use and don't really care to fuel the flames, but yesterday I replaced the regular gear oil in my 915 transaxle with swepco gear oil.

After cleaning up the mess (yuck) I drove the car.

The difference was immediate and noticeable, but not overwelming.

The tranny now requires a little less force to change gears and the changes happen a little faster than before, whether hot or cold.
Before it was very stiff when cold and loosened up a bit as it got warm. I still have to come to a complete stop before shifting from reverse to 1st but all ofther gear changes happen with no noise, not even a click even if I shift a little faster than I should.

It feels better, more precise. I'm sold. The improvement is small but real.
YMMV

It also tastes great in your morning cup of coffee!

How long had it been since you'd changed the gear fluid? I think a lot of the Swepco "miracles" can be attributed to fresh gear oil.

Late one night, I was doing laundy, and grabbed the jug of swepco instead of liquid detergent. I only poured in a couple of ounces before I realised my mistake.

It took a few hundred miles before I noticed a difference.

sammyg2 03-24-2004 09:52 AM

I noticed the difference in less than 10 miles. Maybe if i'm lucky it will improve some more?
The old oil didn't look that bad and didn't smell old, not at all like junkyard oil. It only had about 3000 miles on it if I can believe the PO. He said he changed it a couple months before I bought the car.

I drove it again today and I definitely can tell the difference.
Another nice thing about swepco, it cleans up off the garage floor easier than old gear oil (don't ask).

Besides Swepco, rebuilding the shifter, adjusting it properly and adjusting the clutch all contributed to much better shifting for me.

Yup, I noticed a definate difference in my 901 trans. In fact I was shocked! The difference to me was greater than running ATF in my old toploader Ford 4spd at the strip instead of gear lube. With Swepco my "bad" 2nd gear sychro functions perfectly. To be honest I never would have believed it if I hadn't tried it.

Did the same as sammyg2 on Sunday night. First time using Swepco. Swepco 201 does help, but not overwhelming like sammyg2 says. Improvements not leaps and bounds, but noticeable. I think worth the $38 investment.

Shifting through gears 3-4-5 is better (easier and smoother) especialy 4th and 5th.

1st to 2nd is still clunky, but a little smoother, but not by much.

I notice that the effects of Swepco 201 are best after the engine warms up.

One thing I notice that the blue Swepco is a little bit sticky as it strings between your fingers. Maybe this is one of the properties that makes it work?

Replaced the shifter bushings back in December and overall very pleased with the way it shifts.

Hopefully it will improve more with more driving. I guess I'll have to drive more to find out! It's hard work but somebody's going to have to do it!;)

i am performing this task in the coming week :)

Glad it helped, but Swepco made no difference at all for mine.

Sammy, How old was the former oil? Swepco is good oil for 915s, I use it. Actually just changed mine tonight. I agree that big improvements only come if old oil was wrong stuff or seriously used-up.

Just to add something, my Swepco looked dirty after 10k miles, mostly because I have ltd. slip and DE the car occasionally. Tyson Schmidt of TRE, whom I trust on these matters, recommends more frequent trans oil changes for cars that go to the track, maybe even after each track day, unless car has a trans cooler. Transmission temps can easily reach 250deg. at the track and additives will break down in the lube, including Swepco, which is just a high-quality conventional (dino) oil.

I really didnt notice a difference going from PO??? to Swepco 212 (with moly). I have since gone to Swepco 201 and it shifts great...of course I:
1) replaced the broken helper spring
2) replaced the clutch cable
3) replaced the coupler bushings
4) and rebuilt the transmission
5) then topped it off with Swepco

Must've been the Swepco ;)
(I just crack myself up!) he he he

I noticed some improvement once I switched to 201. The only negative, which is minor, is that I need to drive for a couple of miles the first time I take the car out each day before it seems to "take effect". I remember reading a post from JW on this subject where he thought Swepco was "too slipppery". It may be that it drains off the gears overnight to an extent that it needs to get recirculated/reapplied. Or maybe the opposite is the case, that it's thick and needs to get warmed up a little to become effective.
