Chevron Techron Cleaner

I was tempted to put a Techron Cleaner in my fuel tank but I was reading the package and it says that it should not be put in air cooled two cycle engines - I know what air cooled is but what is a two cycle engine - my knowledge of cars/Porsches is very limited. I have alot to learn - what is a two cycle engine and is the techron cleaner safe for my Porsche??

It's safe for you car. Just don't try it in a weed wacker or chainsaw.

Porsche 911 engines are 4-cycle; it is safe to use Techron in the fuel. I would recommend changing the oil within 500 miles after the Techron treatment. Jim

Two cycle or two stroke engine are the types of small engines found in lawnmovers, leafblowers, chainsaws, and small boat engines.

It is safe to use in your Porsche, no worries.

Ooops, you all beat me to it, you're fast.

My 650 Jet Ski is a 2 cycle engine. They make 2 strokes (up and down travel) of the piston during the combustion cycle instead of the 4 strokes common to automotive engines.

Use the techron.

Incase you're interested in the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke:

2 cycle (or stroke) engines fire the spark plug every time the piston comes to the top of the cylinder. 4 stoke engines fire the plug every other time the piston comes to the top as described below:

1st stroke: spark fires pushing piston down

2nd stroke: piston comes back up, exhaust valve open, exhaust is expelled

3rd stroke: piston descends again, w/o spark. This intake valve opens and the piston going down sucks the new fuel/air mixture into the combustion chamber

4th stroke: piston comes back up and the fuel/air mixture is pressurized making for better combustion. Next the spark plug will fire and the whole cycle will repeat.

At first glance, a 2 stroke seems better, but 4 strokes offer better control over combustion and complete removal of combustion waste products after combustion.

Since nobody has explained it yet:

The reason why you don't want to put the Techron Cleaner in the 2-cycle motor is because most two-cycle motors are lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. After carberation, the fuel/oil/air mixture circulates below the cylinder, lubricating the cylinder walls, rod, crankshaft, etc. before being forced into the cylinder for combustion. The Techron will break-down the oil, reducing its lubricating abilities, which will likely damage the engine--it would be similiar to running the 2-cycle engine on just plain gas (without the oil mixed in).

As already explained, your Porsche motor is 4-cycle... but there are some beautiful boxer two-stroke diesel motors...hmmm, that might me a neat project for a 911...
