Question oil cooler t-stat

I noticed that my oil cooler fan comes on the second I turn the ignition. My astute powers of deduction tell me I have a thermostat issue. I am still vey much a newbie and I know my limits on self-repairs. How difficult is it to replace the thermostat,? Do I need to remove the whole unit? Should I take it to my friendly mechanic?

It may be the relay. You can try swapping the fan relay for another relay and see if that cures the problem. If it does, you need a new relay. Off-hand, I can't remember exactly which relay it is. You may be able to figure it out in a search of the forum archives.

let clarify some things. it isnt the cooler tstat that is acting up. it is the cooler thermoswitch in the top of the radiator cooler itself. or the relay in your truck area. if it is the tswitch, it will be a pain. you need to drop the cooler to reach it. but i dont know if you have enough flex in the lines to keep those on. i would do it myself. nothing magical about it. it is only plumbing. but you need to figure out if it is the relay or switch.

Assuming this is a new problem...and not caused by incorrect wiring.,,
The thermoswitch provides a ground to the relay to turn it on. If the wire has chaffed where it passes through the fenderwall and is grounding out is also a possibility.
