How do I ship these wheels?

A lot of wheel retailers say max. $100-$150 for shipping 4 wheels with tires. When I try to calculate shipping on UPS' website, I get $114 per box for slowest service, my own packaging and with me dropping it off. I'm figuring I need to put two wheels (with tires) into each box and each box will weigh around 100 lbs. There has to be a cheaper way, if all these places are doing it for far less. How do I do this? Thanks.

Richard,
First pack them individually.

My wheels came from CA on Amtrak. Less than $100 and 4 day service. The King st station has a shipping depot.

you may also want to try Greyhound. Arlington and DC terminals.

The downside to these carriers is they don't drop off at the door. your customer will have to pick them up.

I have found that shipping used tires is not worth it. I ship only rims. UPS legal sizing permits one 7/9" combo in each box. Total cost for 2sets of 7/9" was no more than $67.00.

Used tires? Sell them locally and save yourself the trouble of shipping them.

Try Fedex Ground.

If possible you can "tie" two tire/wheel combos together. Then place cardboard circles over the rims which face outward.

Tires are part of the deal and they are in far too good shape to toss. I'll check with Greyhound and Amtrak.

i would only ship one tire wheel combo at a time or you will go to heavy weigth prices, a 20 cub box made rund or a 24 cube will work put sdomething over the face, fedex is the cheapest for this combo, but have heard great things about grey hound, Kevin

skip the boxes!
http://www.tirerack.com/about/return_tires_wheels.htm

I had Al Reed ship four wheels and tires from CA to Canada for about $140. He packages them as in the Tire rack diagram...
I think it was UPS, but could have been Fedex. (they were 17x8s with 235/45s IIRC)

Richard,
UPS and FedEx charge by the piece so multiple pieces add up real fast. An option is to use a freight forwarder (that's what I do). We only charge by the weight, not the pieces. Example: I recently purchased 2 sport seat for my SC , shipped from Long Beach, Ca to Minneapolis, MN. Total cost about $80.00 and that include a residential pick up.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I sent wheels and tires coast to coast a couple months back for around 100 bucks. Fedex ground, strap a pair together with strapping tape and wrap in shrink or plastic. They're difficult to handle but its the way to go.

You should be able to ship all 4 for less than $100 via fedex ground if you are careful about the box size and use 4 boxes (26x26x26 is good if they will fit). This post has some good shipping info:

I bought a set of fuchs with tires from CAnada last year. The guy faced two wheels together, wrapped some rope around the outside with a little duck tape and sent them UPS. $120 for all four. Have to admit I was a little shocked when they arrived.

That was a good thread. Forwardair doesn't serve any airport remotely close to where these are going. Greyhound says they allow one box only. FedEx looks like the best option. Will they take the wheels bound together in no box?

Yep, I bought an OEM tire for my ac*ra, and the guy I bought it from shipped it FEDEX Ground. $10. He just taped up the tire and they slapped a label on it.

I think so, but with the tires and wheels, I think they will weigh too much for the lower rates. Weigh one, multiply by 2, and try the rate computer at Fedex.com. Might be cheaper and safer to buy some boxes. Try a custom wheel shop for throwaways...worth a sixpack of beer donation.

They will take them without boxes, so long as they're secured and wrapped so that they don't get everything else in the load dirty.

Computer monitor boxes (Gateway or Dell) can fit tires if you have some old ones or know of some. Although Tirerack sends them to you unboxed, I have gotten some flak from some shippers about the need for any item to be boxed. It was just easier to toss them in a big box.
