alternative for Swepco 201
Does anybody have any experience with gear oil other than Swepco 201? it seems nobody is selling it on this side of the atlantic, and it's kinda nuts to order it with and have it shippped over, since the cost of the shipping is going to be more than the swepco itself...
i've always like Shell, for engine oil and fuel, but no idea on the gear oil: Shell Spirax x75W90 Shell TRansaxle Oil 75W-90 100% Synthetic for manual gearboxes and transaxles, Ok'ed by Porsche and Ferrari ( probably for new cars so dunno about 915 tranny) does anybody have any ideas on tranny oil available in Europe?? also , how much oil actually goes in a 915 tranny? 5 liter? 10 ? 20 ? more? not a clue myself...

Hi Stijn,
Swepco is available from Berlyn Services based in the UK. If you want to try an alternative you could try Redline Oil. I used this at my last change and it improved shifting. I haven't tried Swepco yet but probably will for my next change, as a comparison. I got the Redline oil from Demon Tweeks, again in the UK.

If I remember rightly, it's about 3 litres. Maybe someone else could confirm?? Small containers make it easier to fill the box up. I didn't realise you were ready for gearbox oil yet!! Great progress

Just had a thought. If you're filling a completely empty tranny, it may take more than the 3 litres mine took!!??

I believe the amount needed in a dry tranny is 3.4 liters

i'll try and find someone from our Bracknell office who happens to drive over to Rotterdam, one Gallon should cover my dry tranny, can't wait to fill 'er up
Swepco in my tranny , Shell ultra helix in the flat6, ATE superblue for my new stainless brakelines... and 5 chickens and a goat for the voodoo ritual... i'm not going for half work , scared ****less that my attempt at 911 work would go wrong somewhere...

Don;t know about what is a good lubricant on your side of the pond but whatever you buy, you will need 3 quarts.

thx Ed, i gave em a call, but they never heard of Swepco
i think i'll just go with the Shell Primax 75w90, i'm pretty convinced Swepco is the best, but if there's nobody selling it...i'll go with Shell, i've always had good results with it in other applications, so i'll give it a try

Stijn,
There's a few UK suppliers that carry Swepco now, see here: http://partsforporsche.co.uk/osc/advanced_search_result.php?osCsid=fdad2b9bdd623aef c1005a43750bfd4f&keywords=swepco&osCsid=fdad2b9bdd623aefc1005a43750bfd4f Should be cheaper than importing from the US! Cheers, Tim.

I've used Mobil1 synthetic gear oil in my 915 and it worked just fine. In fact, after I switched to Swepco (from the Mobil1) I couldn't tell a difference.
