yet another turn signal gremlin

finally some nice weather comes along, go out for a drive, turning into my driveway I noticed something odd with the dash indicator lights. I searched but didn't find anything like this.

vintage=73.5 T

so here is what happens:
hazard lights on:
right side blinks (f and r)
left side out (f and r)
red dash light blinks

Right turn signal:
right side blinks (f and r)
green right dash light out

Left turn signal
left side out (f and r)
both green dash arrows blink

What i have checked:
front are rear bulbs are OK -removed and bench checked-all other bulbs light in some fashon at some time.

no voltage to the left blinkers seen with meter, using the battery ground strap as ground (ie not the signal housing as ground). that makes me think it is not the signal housing ground(s) plus all other lights in each housing function.

all fuses are fine, removed, and checked each, then replace with new for kicks. nothing

Turn signal assembly on steering column was replace about 1500 miles ago, pretty sure this hasn't been going on that long. plus i would have thought the mechanic would have checked that they worked after he replaced it.

installed head light relays last month, may have messed something up. same behavior whether headlights are on or off. pulled headlight fuses, same behavior. So i don't think it is related the the relay install.

anyone have a guess?

my bet is the signal relay/flasher. looking at the electrical diagram it looks like the same one is used for both turn and hazard lights. the hazard switch works for the other side of the car and it seems really unlikely that both the hazard and turn signal switches would go at once.

So where is that located, I looked near the fuse block, nada. Under the dash? I want to see if voltage is making it to the left side input.

this doesn't really explain why the dash indicators are screwy...

anyone, anyone?

If I'm not mistaken, the relay for your flashers is in your trunk near the dash on the drivers side. (may need a mirror and small hands to find). Sounds like a real good place to continue your diagnosis. Also, both of my dash indicators light when either signal is on (all outside lamps work fine). I have been living with it, but if you find a solution, let me know.

well, i'd like to say that i fixed it, but it might just be more accurate to say that it works now.

I went out to find the flasher in the trunk, turn ed on the hazards, and started looking. then i stepped away from the car and noticed the lights on the left side were now working. turns signals all work fine, and the dash indicators are correct now too.

this is all i can come up with:
I also noticed that the hazard button itself was lite, where before it was not. before just the parking brake light on the oil pressure/temp guage was flashing, not the hazzard button.

so maybe my hazard switch is going, and just turning it off and on a few times while messing around got good contact again? I drew out just the wiring diagram for the signal lights, and could make sense. the hazard and turn signal switches do share some wires. Although i am still a loss to explain why the turn signal indicators were messed up.

oh well, i guess i will just keep and eye on the indicators and hope it stays working...

fun, fun, fun,
jason
