Unhappy Almost another Texas Barbeque

Had a great Sunday morning run,low RPM's as I enter the driveway, stalls, cranked up but sluggish, get enough RPM's to get into garage, shut down and boy what a smell.Grab the extinguisher, popped the trunk and gas was everywhere, ruptured fuel line.Glad it happened in the driveway, otherwise I would most likely had noticed it when burning. All fixed now

Sounds like you got lucky. What year car do you have? Was it an injector line?

Ya, count your blessings. Same thing happened to me back in '85. My girlfriend (now wife) and I were riding in the 914 and it wouldn't go past 55 mph. Next thing I know we smell gas. I pull off the road and pop the engine lid. GAS SPEWING EVERYWHERE! GET OUT OF THE CAR NOW! Luckily, I shut it down before anything caught fire. Came back later with some new fuel line and tools and replaced the ruptured line, brought it home and replaced the rest. Still have the car (and the girl!).

I almost had some NC-style barbecue this weekend (vinegar based as opposed to tomato based).

Took a perfectly good Craftsman Professional series wrench and welded it across the terminals of my alternator, resulting in really neat-o glowing-orange electrical components and showers of sparks blowing all over the engine bay. I got the battery disconnected and fire extinguisher sprayed on all the hot spots just as they were gathering critical mass to burst into flames. Mmmmmm, sure does smell good.

The good news was, I got my internally regulated alternator, black powdercoated fan housing, and silver powdercoated fan all installed, POS external VR disconnected), POS Marchal alt ripped out, idiot light no longer on, and took the car for a good hard drive to air out the stench. No harm done!

The guy who burned his ring finger to the bone with a molten wedding ring also thought it was too much trouble to disconnect the battery. Jim

threads like this keep reminding me what cheap insurance a fire extinguisher in the trunk would be...

Yep, there's nothing more pitiful than a guy with a Porsche trying to beat out a fire in the engine compartment with a Levi jacket. Fuel pump was still running pouring gas onto the fire through melted injector lines. Stopped, gave him the fire extinguisher out of my International Scout and suggested he remove the key from the ignition switch. Saved car, looked like $1500 worth of engine damage. Jim

First day owning my Pcar, I met some friends at an elementary school parking lot to give some rides. After a few spirited rides down back roads I passed the school lot at speed then turned around and pulled in. One of my friends in the lot was yelling something about my car being on fire, but I was caught up in the fun and thought he was commenting on my fast drive-by. As I got closer to my friends it hit me... I pulled to a puddle and hopped out tearing my tshirt off to smother the flames. Oil fires are hotter than I thought... after splashing the heat exchangers with no results I crawled into the puddle and put out the fire with my soaked tshirt. Luckily the only thing damaged (quite seriously though!) was my ego.

I wish it was simply a case of "I can't be bothered". When in fact it was just idiotic absent-mindedness. Probably stems from a bad habit of having changed lots of A2 VW alternators in ten minutes...

On the flipside, I always take my wedding ring off before heading out to the garage. Visions of it getting caught and fileting my ring finger...

Hey, at least I had the fire extinguisher handy.

When I started working around high voltage and high current systems including back up battery banks which cannot be turned off, the wedding ring with the wife's full concurrence, went into the jewlery box and now only comes out for ceremonial occasions. Jim
