Project 73 911 R/RS -- Week 5

This would have been a breakthrough week if I had better planned how much Wurth Rust Guard would be needed to coat the car. So far 2 quarts have covered the interior and the entire front end. I've got 2 more on order from Pelican (Tom, please rush) to get the rear end done. The pics say it all: more grinding, more polishing, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I also spent a lot time screwing around pulling various cables out of the tunnel and even cutting the heater cable tubes out with a Dremel. Just about 5 more hours of engine bay/underseat metal clean up, then painting, and then, well, parts start flying back on the car.

Weeks gone by:

with links back to 2 and 1.

I pretty much ran out of steam here yesterday and had to call it a day. Got home and fell into a coma. For the first time, I have a new respect for the cost/benefit of dipping. Need to finish up the underneath here and then paint and then it's all fun from here on.

awesome shaun,
i'll bet you were one whipped puppy when you went to bed! how many man hours do you estimate it's taken to strip it entirely?

Very nice work Shaun!

cstreit 03-29-2004 07:13 AM

Wow dude, you did all that stripping yourself?

Whipped pup probably doesn't even BEGIN to describe it. NICE WORK!

My progress too: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-autocross-track-racing/155788-racecar-painting-progress.html

naparsei 03-29-2004 07:13 AM

Why paint it? Go DeLorean style... (j/k)

Starting with a relatively stripped down shell, I'd say I have a minimun of 40 hours into stripping. I've used:
mapp burned and scraped
3 different wire brushes
new 3M course plastic matrix stripping discs
40 grit flap discs
24 grit tungsten carbide disc
aircraft coating stripper.

In short, I've used every possible method other than dry ice.

two things: I am at about 1/4 of the cost of dipping in tooling. If I add in my personal time, I am about twice the cost of dipping.

This project is on a budget so I thought I was doing the right thing here, but in retrospect I probaby should have had it dipped. That said, I will never sell the car and I truly "own" it, and that does count for something.

And I've got great shoulders now too!

Nice work Shawn! I haven't followed the entire thread previous to this one. but I feel your pain! This stripping work is really the foundation for years of trouble free ownership ahead. So keep it up.
What are you mapping out for a goal of saftey equipment - cage?seats?harness etc?
Will you use a fire system?
Just curious, as it seems that many of us that have gone through similar projects have made different saftey related product choices.
Did you decide on a final color too?

best Regards -

Jim

Hey Jim,

Here's what I am planning: Full RSR-style custom cage. I am sending a check today for a used Sparco Pro 2000 seat I found on the board, haven't thought about harness yet, but very soon, and I would like to put in a fire suppression system. It's getting a standard box fuel cell up front unless I can find a good used cell designed for the car.

Final color is Aga blue with white accents. A 67 color.

You'll be using a 3.6?? The color sounds great and you'll be able to play around with wheel offsets to get big rubber while still keeping the early style bodywork.

Keep up the good work.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-29-2004 09:25 AM

It's getting a stock 3.2 for now. I was going to go with Rene's DTA engine management with cams, but think it makes more sense just to get the car on the road, sort it, then start to play next winter. I really don't think I will ever buy a house!

I am hoping I can get 225-16s under GT-Racing narrow R fenders, 275 our back under Rennspeed plastic quarters.

This thing will have to go RSR bodywork to lay down enough rubber to be competitive, but then the driver has a LOT more work to do than the car.

dotorg 03-29-2004 09:28 AM

Shaun, James is doing your cage, right?

I think my car is next in line behind yours :)

Shaun @ Tru6 03-29-2004 11:04 AM

Hey George,

Yes, James has started and I hope may be done this week. Suspension will all be tied in. When the cage is done, it will be a whole different car.

dotorg 03-29-2004 11:48 AM

Yeah he was telling me about it, you definitely have to post pics when its done! I'm not doing anything extreme, just working around the fact that there aren't any bolt-in options for SWB cars. I'm only doing a hoop (braced to b-pillars), a triangulated brace on either side back to the rear deck and firewall, crossbar and harness bar.

Full cages on street cars make me worried about cracking my skull open. :)

Bill Verburg 03-29-2004 12:13 PM

Outstanding!

timz 03-29-2004 02:12 PM

Awsome work! Thanks for the update

onewhippedpuppy 03-29-2004 02:31 PM

Glad to see you're keeping busy Shaun, keep up the good work!

Shaun @ Tru6 03-29-2004 03:20 PM

Matt, your car is for sale? What's the story? How's the new child?

Chuck Moreland 03-29-2004 08:12 PM

Damn! That is clean.

bob tilton 03-29-2004 08:34 PM

these are the posts that i look forward to reading/viewing. great work!

Schrup 03-29-2004 09:29 PM

Shaun, I'm glad your project is progressing well. I'm sure I'll be refering back to your threads when I muster up the courage (& money) to tackle such an undertaking.

MMARSH 03-30-2004 01:54 AM

Looks great, Makes me tired just looking at it. Keep up the good work and keep posting pictures.

Thanks Bob, your car and many others here on the board are great inspiration.

Paul, the whole key (time and money) to this is to give up the dream of home ownership and future financial security. I mean how much fun can you have in your home (it's a good place to sleep and keep your tools, but that's about it) versus driving around, and who wants to be old with a lot of money, which is really the best way to get old fast. it's sort of a "ive now" principle that works for me.

dickster 03-30-2004 03:31 AM

i can only read about this sort of project - it wears me out just readin about it

i applaud your dedication, skill and patience.

btw - that wurth paint looks like "hammerite" that we get here (is it a hammered finish?), i wonder whether its produced under licence?
