Question on stainless Dansk for 88 Carrera

I need to replace my muffler. I would like to purchase a stainless Dansk stock replacement. My question is will the stock black tip fit on? In the catalogs it looks like it is just a polished end? Has anyone fitted one of these? Thanks.

Best,

Don

Forget the black tip - keep the polished dansk tip, it looks much better IMHO.

Contact "Danskman" here on the Board. He's a rep for the company.

I just put a SS Danske on my 87. The stainless tip is part of the muffler. Looks nice, but not quite as "throaty" as I would have liked.

Don:

My '88 CS came stock but the seller thru in a Borla - works great for me and fits fine! Butt dyno says a few more hp. I second contacting "Danskman" - he knows a lot about Dansk since he sells them.

Don...

The original muffler on your car has a 60mm tailpipe. If you go with the stock stainless muffler, it also has a 60mm tailpipe. If you have a black tip on your original muffler, you should be able to remove it and install it on the stock replacement.

Chuck: Did you purchase a sport muffler, or was it the stock version? If yours was the sport muffler (84 mm tip), I had the same reaction. For a sport muffler, it was pretty tame.

Yes, Scott. I got the sport muffler witht he 84mm tip. Not quite the agressive sound I was looking for, but I was told it may get a bit louder after 500 or so miles. I'm waiting!!!

Maybe a "bit" louder, but don't expect a real throaty growl. Frankly, though I like the originality of the Dansk sport muffler, if I had to do it all over again, I'd probably do something different.

I would have to agree with you. I was told the shop could take out a baffles to change the sound. What are your thoughts on that?

I paid a lot of money for mine. Unless the shop really knew what they were doing, I'd be hesitant to have them perform a baffle-ectomy.

Mike (Danskman): What are your thoughts on this?

Scott... The Dansk sport mufflers are designed to add a sportier sound than stock without resonating , and allow the classic sound of the 911 to shine through, and also offer perfect OE fit without modifications. The issue of resonance on 911 mufflers is a very big consideration. If you've been in a 911 that has an exhaust system that resonates, you know what I mean. It gets old real quick. You find yourself increasing or decreasing RPM's or shifting to avoid it. The Dansk sport mufflers are designed to offer a moderate increase in HP, a "throatier" rumble at idle, more sound at full throttle, and a moderate sound at cruising speeds. They are not targeted for the people that are trying to squeeze every last ounce of HP out of their car, or are looking for an overly loud exhaust system. The Dansk mufflers try to keep the integrity of the classic 911 by not making the exhaust tone front, center stage. Sound is a difficult thing to judge, as one person might feel a particular tone is too loud, another may think it's not loud enough. Sometimes, the person who prefers a louder volume will not object to resonance. It's a balancing act between the two.

As you all know, there are several exhaust options for a 911. Some work well, some don't. I don't think there's one that fits everybody. Dansk has been an OE supplier to Porsche for many years, and I believe the sport products they offer are a nice complement to the car, without being overbearing, and utilizing the original design and fit. Many, many happy campers out there with Dansk sport mufflers on their 911's.

I guess these are my general comments, but I'd be happy to discuss in further detail. I have a Dansk premuffler and Dansk single out sport on my car, and enjoy it very much. For some, there's always a "what if it were just a little louder?" question out there. The key is, is that as the volume increases, so does the possibility of resonance. That threshold is one you need to be careful not to step over.

Scott... after rereading your posted question, I think I may have misinterpreted your question. Sorry. Kinda like asking someone the time, and he tells you how to build a watch!

Anyway, I have talked to some guys that have done the "baffle-ectomy", as you call it, and some, but not all, have been pleased. My general response is that if you decide to go that route, it's somewhat of a one-way street. Once you've hacked, it's hacked for good, and you need to be willing to live with the outcome or buy a replacement.
