Is this car worth 8K?????

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2470349355&category=10156

I have been watching this 911 on Ebay (I know, I know) however I emailed the seller and he is willing to take 9K for a buy now, but I think I'll offer him 8K and see.
I asked him for a ppi and he no problem, however I need to do it before the auction ends. The problems with the car is it leaks oil (5 drops a week. not bad) and sounds like the trans needs synchro's.......So with these and if the ppi checks out ok, is 8K a fair price..?

Let me hear your thoughts.....

I would say it's worth it since he is willing to do a PPI. Nic ecolor, just keep in mind the cost of new sincros, try to get an estimate from whomever gives you the PPI so that you can add that to the car TRUE toal price.

depends on if it has been crashed real bad. Looks like 6/7s to me (not 7/8s). Given that they admit to crash damage and bondo, I'd want it checked to make sure the frame is straight.

If you don't mind a project, it could be OK for $8K.

bad vibe Dr. Wilson? One red flag is that it appears to be a small independent dealer...and that usually isn't a good source for a 911.

passadena, keep looking here in socal and you will find one as their are plenty for sale, the trans is an issue, and they are right the guy is a dealer. Find a local who is the owner and you can talk to them and get the straight scoup, the old my wife is ready to pop and I need a sedan routine. In the meantime sell that benz and step up to a turbo or a 993 cab and get the best of both worlds. can help to feel pumped after seeing porsche dominate this last weekend at the 909 speedway, a RUF turbo and 2 GT3's going at it like Ali Frazier.

looks beautiful...exterior color is striking. if the body checks out straight and the motor has good compression, i think 8k is a great price for the car. nothing was mentioned about mileage or compressions, etc. interior look nice too. i think i see the warping he mentions on the passenger side...i'd wanna get that sorted out were it mine. it's a coupe! yay! sunroof is always nice. what about the compressor he mentions in the box...is it a rotary style?

Vote 'yes' on proposition Petrol Blue. The compliments on the car's color are worth extra wrench time. Really. You see very few in Petrol Blue, and I can't think of another color that looks as classy and fast as this. It's scary how close the condition and options are to mine. The car stands out in a sea of Guards Red.

OBVIOUSLY, if it's not in nice shape, don't get it. BUT, this is a color you'll fall in love with in person.

That car sounds a lot like the car that I bought, and about the same price. Most would have said walk away from my car, but I took the gamble, and I'm having a blast with it. It leaks oil from the oil return tubes, and cam cover. It has a bad 1st and 2nd syncro, and it had a nasty dent in the rear fender. I have fixed some of the oil leaks, and I got the dents fixed. I am planning on rebuilding the tranny this winter if it can wait. I enjoy working on the car, and I budgeted the repair money into the purchase of the car so there have not been any suprises. If you like DIY work, then that could be a good car. If you are planning on taking it to a shop to have the work done, you will get screwed in the long run.

Awesome driver. If the motor PPIs just drive it! I bet it feels great with the fresh shocks. You dont have to worry about it, track it, the kids bike can scratch it - mods OK originality not an issue. I bet you can flog it for 2 years and then buy a rebuilt tranny swap it in and fix the oil leaks at the same time. All that said I would rather buy a similar car with no head stud compression/leak down issues for a few $K more if that ends up being an issue.

Body work - who cares !! if its safe to drive and doesnt wear out tires - looks good from 10 feet Concours SUCKS!

I agree, those are 6&7s. No engine pics, so get the engine number and make sure it still has the 3.0 in it. If its not bent and it still runs and shifts $8k would not be a bad price IMHO. If your budget is more than $8k, Id look for a better car that didnt need a tranny rebuild.

Looks to be worth a Mechanical and Body PPI. I love that color too.

Like the others have said, Petrol Blau is a great color. But as you know pictures can and do lie about paint condition if allowed to do so.

I would be leary of the sellers comments about the syncros. That statement could mean they grind on every shift, or it's just hard to get it into gear.

Hi Ed. I spent 4 months looking at cars on ebay, auto-trader, etc. and wondering why all the good ones were on the opposite coast. Well, it seemed that way anyway. Pictures don't begin to tell the story when it comes to car shopping. I would go so far to as say pictures are more deceptive than discriptive. Nothing wrong with making an offer, but be prepared to make the drive to check it out. I can't recall the number of cars that my wife and I drove out to see and I only looked at them to save the feeling of the owner. Some of these $10-12k 911's discribed as "head-turners, mint, pristine, like new, made me want to run away when I got within that "20 footer" range. I know appearances can be only cosmetic, but I felt if the outside was that bad, how healthy can that driveline be?

I know anyone that has car shopped for any extended time has seen these same types of ads promising a lot of car for little money, but just remember patience is the key.

Good luck on your hunt!

Bad vibes...yes. If this guy is a car dealer and is willing to let it go for less than the average of what other comparable cars are bringing, something is wrong with the car - he's trying to flip it.

About the oil leaks and bondo, well, There is no way I'd spend money on a PPI on the car without seeing, driving, and looking at every inch of it. This picture shows how the hood and fenders ar out of line. Also, the driver's side of the bumper points up hill. Check out the accordian. Just friendly advice.

Way to go Ed. This might be the right car,it might not be ,but you are out looking.IMHO just how much DIY you are willing to do should always be concidered in any P-car purchase.Good hunting , Randy
