Smart Racings modified oil tank

Has anyone upgraded there oil tank from Smart Racing? Where they add baffles and 2 more quarts of capacity. If so, does the added capacity help any for oil cooling on top of keeping the oil level stable?

Thanks

Chris Streit rolled his own, says it worked great.

I'm going to have them do it. $400 is expensive, but my thoughts are:

1) It's an oil tank. I don't want to get any welding boogers inside from doing it myself that will break loose and stroke my motor out; and

2) Money is less precious than time.

I'm also going to have the tank powdercoated, insulation be damned.

Thanks, it looks like he just did the baffles and not the increase in oil capacity. The only thing I notice all the time is when you increase the rpms the oil pressure goes up like it should but the oil level goes down. I figure the oil goes down since it's getting sucked out of the tank even if the level is OK, or is it? I haven't noticed my oil light ever coming on and there have been times at idle where the pressure was just below 1bar. It makes sense that the oil pressure would drop when you brake and your off throttle but I would think the oil level would rise.

I've not seen the Smart Racing tank in a while, but when they add the capacity, do they lower the pick up point to the pressure pump? If not, then the added capacity won't help as much as the baffle alone. If the oil is low and the braking forces cause the oil to "bunch up" on the front of the tank, the add capacity will help very little...think about that (where is the pick up point?).

Tha baffles slow the oil flow under braking to prevent the pressure pump from sucking in air. If Smart Racing adds a lower section of a second tank while adding the baffle(s), then the added capacity will help. Keep in mind that the event last a few seconds max...

Chris may be out in the garage buffing his new paint right now, so he'll chime in later I'm sure. But the baffling on his tank is simple and requires just a few 1-2 inch welds. The tank is thoroughly cleaned before it is re-installed. It's a clean installation and it works. And we have a great powder coater not too far away...

I'm not bashing SRacing here..so don't start flaming...I just like simple solutions...and I like it when it's cheap too!

My ears were itching.

The modification is simple neough in process but the key is to make the cuts in the right place, and sizing the baffle so as to allow flow, but not allow surge. Fortunately I have a pipeline engineer with flow calc's in his head on tap (Souk!).

With regard to weld boogers, good concern to have. THe slot is JUST big enough to fit the piece, and a low weld setting is used to prevent any changce of "burn through.

The extra capacity is nice enough I guess, but unneeded from my perspective.

"insulation be damned"

I doubt there is a big difference -- data is what counts tho.
