996 for 650 Euros for a Weekend in Germany from Avis
I know there have been several threads about renting a 911 in Germany and some of the answers have been somewhat obscure and/or I think mis-leading in terms of difficulty, details, etc.
So, this weekend while I had an hour to kill in the Nuremberg airport before catching my flight back to Boston I just asked. I just got a quote from AVIS for renting a 996 C2 from the Nuremberg airport for 650 Euros from 12 noon Friday until 12 noon Monday. [1] 200 KM per day, 600 km total, then 1.75 Euros/KM (yikes) [2] All drivers must be over 30 and have had a drivers license for at least 3 years [3] A deposit of 3000 Euros will be placed across TWO credit cards that must be in the same name (so no 'team deposits') [4] In case of Damages there is a deductable of 950 Euro. All in all this sounded very reasonable. Essentially 220 Euros/day ($275 in Imperial Dollars), and the rest of the terms seemed straight-up corporate rental car terms. I'll let you know how it works out this summer when I return for my vacation. Lomotpk |

Ain't worth it. I was on my way to rent a 996 at Porsche-Zentrum Leipzig in November, when I hit traffic so bad, that I just turned my engine off and sat for an hour. After that I figured I was much better off paying for my Renault beater to sit in traffic than for a 996. Sure, there are some good stretches where you can really open here up. But the traffic, construction zones and speed limits totally killed my buzz for springing for a 996 for a day.

Is it a manual or an automatic?
How far is the pick-up point from the Nurburgring?

Nuremberg is nowhere's near the Nurburgring - at least 4-6 hrs. drive. I'm pretty sure there's no chance of AVIS letting you take one of their cars onto the Ring. If you want a good speed rush, go visit Ruf and sweet talk them into taking you for a test drive. Otherwise, you'll need a friend to loan you his car for a track. No rental company would allow that, unless it were for extreme amounts of money.

Guess I'll stick to the Ring Taxi when I finally make it over there.

Oh, if you do get to Bavaria (where Nuremberg is), the big track in those parts is Hockenheim and I'm sure it's every bit as good as Nurburgring. But still do not skip Ruf!
