I'm planning to invest in a set of SSI heat exchangers soon, given the claims, a set that I hope to have a long time. Initially they will go on a 73S spec engine I'm building up. However, in the next 12-18 months I would like to upgrade to a 80-83 SC and want to transfer these to that car. Question is, given that criteria, what model SSI do I buy?
Do I buy the thin flange with the O2 sensor installed and plan later to shim the longer SC studs to make them fit, or do I buy the later model thick flange and change to longer studs on the early engine? As far as I see, these are the only differences? Thanks in advance to all you gurus out there for the advice... ![]() Fred |

Doesn't the SC use thin flange?
Are you upgrading to a SC, or an SC engine? If a SC, get the o2 equipped exchange if you have to deal w/ smog inspections, otherwise don't worry about the o2 sensor.

SC's have both thin and thick flanges. I had thin on mine.

78/79 is thin. replacing all the studs on the 73 would be an ordeal, unless you have the heads off and use a drill jig. they don't just unscrew.

it's easier to make long-studs shorter, than it is to make short-studs longer.
=> go with the thin-flanged. a stack of washers can make make long-studs (effectively) shorter.

I would say go with thin flange like island911.
As I recall both the '73 and SC are using short studs. As for O2 sensor, I don't know but again it's easier to plug a unused hole than drill one and weld in a nut/thread for the sensor. I bought my thinflange SSI for my SC but later upgraded to Carrera 3.2L engine, transfered the SSI's using lots of washers. With Dansk sportmuffler it's sounds sooooo good.
