Spark Plug Question
I have read in different places that platinum plugs are not recommended for the 80s vintage 911s...
So am wondering: a) Why? b) What plugs are you guys using? In my case, I'm looking for plugs for my 87 930, so would love to hear from other owners. thanks... |
Platinum plugs were designed for newer caes with a waste spark, (Distribotor-Less) Iginition systems. They are designed to spark in both directions. They would work in your car but why spend the extra money? when there are cheaper plugs that were designed for your iginition system.

Patrick,
I don't think the ignition system has anything to do with it, and certainly the 'fire from both directions' sounds like pure advertising hype! The platinum plugs do not seem to exhibit long life or resitance to fouling used in cars without EFI. My feeling is that the heat range 'latitude' isn't very wide, so, consequently, they offer no advantage on carbureted or non-EFI cars without precise mixture control. My experience on carbureted engines was that they fouled sooner than a good copper-core plug ... and that was on American V-8s and Japanese 4-cylinder engines! |
hey if you have a a DIS car try it
run it with a plug out hold the plug to engine ground the spark will travel "backwards" during the waste spark. |
Hi folks,
Thanks for the confirmation... And Warren, I also heard the same reason you mentioned. So the million dollar question - what plug should I use then? thanks... |
Bosch Plugs..either the copper or silver...should be great.
NGK copper in the proper heat range are very good too, and have nicely finished threads. ---Wil Ferch |
Check out Steve W's excellent reply the platinum plug question here:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=156488 I hear Steve knows a thing or two about 911 ignitions ;). |
Autolites work well too.

Sounds like all I need to get is copper/silver ones in similar heat range then :)
Sure will save a few $$$... Thanks! |
