FOr those of you with a emgine bay, lid mounted, light...

How do these friggin' things work?
I can't find anything in my manuals or wiring diagrams that cover these engine bay lights. My car is an '82 and it has a light mounted on the bottom of the deck lid. I tried to take it apart to clean it up and check for voltage, but the damn thing was rivetted together at the factory and can't be opened.

It has this sliding sort of chrome part that covers the bulb, and rotates to expose it.

I can't find a switch mounted anywhere (like the trunk switch) so the only thing I can figure is the chrome cover thingie acts as an on/off switch.

It no workie workie.

I'll take a few pics to show what I'm talking about...

This light is just about the ONLY thing on my car that doesn't work.

...and the door buzzer, but that is a blessing.

The switch is the rotating cover. Supposedly it lights up when you expose the bulb. Mine doesn't work & I have no idea what to do to get it going.

According to my 1980 owner's manual the engine compartment light only works when the headlights are on and the cover on the light is open. I have one of those lights, sitting on the work bench waiting to be installed.

The lights have to be on. When you open the chrome cover the light should come on.

edit: Like Sam said.

I have one but since I have running a duck have never tried it, other than taking it a part and cleaning it.

Thanks for the tip.

Mine hasn't had a bulb since I bought it. What type of bulb does it take, and is it generally available at auto parts stores?

Leland,

The light on my 86 didn't work either.

Post some pics of yours so I can see if it is the same as mine.

I repaired mine with pics showing the steps for the fix. Just make sure you have 12v going to the light unit....mine had 12v to the unit but 0v at the bulb socket.
