Stuart, check the post your kills thread - I have joined in the melee.

personally i think it should be done in a 997 turbo with 4 wheel drive. pepper wouldnt have the best balance to do a wrc.. i could see somthing that tall tipping around some of those turns at that rate of speed. (which is why i dont think wrc would be cool with the pepper running in the wrc).
on the other hand, the pepper would be good for paris dakar! |
I'll chime in here as well. I have both a comprehensively modified 2002 WRX wagon that is equal to a new STI and a 1970 911S with street/track modifications. As much as I love the 911, my WRX can wipe up the track/road/autox course with it. It is also faster than my previous 911, an '85 carrera 3.2. That being said, the 911 has more character, is more challenging to drive, more rewarding when driven well, and is the car I would keep if I had to choose between the two. If for no other reason, I'd have to chose the Porsche just for the sound of that heavenly 2.2 MFI flat six. There is nothing else like it.

Good judgment comes from experience.
Unfortunately experience comes from bad judgment! The 911 has 40+ years going....nuff said! |
The 2.7 '75 was pretty convincing against Mr Bates (1:12.6700) and a couple of the 3.2s where not far behind.
rswannabe, I didn't mean THAT OLD!!! Just Kidding. They do sound very nice. The power to weight on one of those is pretty good, right? What is it, about 180hp to 1000kg. Stop spending money on your WRX man and spend it all on your 911!!! ;) k9handler, so you're saying the 911 is good because it has had a lot of development... no, hang on, you're saying all the early cars where bad... no, hang on... I've nearly got it... head hurting... need beer... |
As the car is now it is a little over 2,300 lbs, so about 1,050 KG. 180 hp factory rating for the 2.2S. Don't worry, there is no more spending on the WRX and all funds are now directed to the 911. Got to work on getting the kg's down and the hp's up.;) And its not that old. Its the same age as me. 1970 was a very good year by the way.

amk
what I am saying is that all makes and models of cars go through development and testing, Porsche did this with the first 911 and found through experience that they could better the car...and yes some judgments were bad. |
Yeah, just look at the dashboard. The worlds most effective anti theft device.

Aren't we trying to compare two totally different things here?
The 911 was designed to be driven on the street quickly by good drivers for the pleasure driving quickly and covering long distances. Its been massaged and changed to perform brilliantly on the track and rally stages, far beyond what was in the original intent. That's good in that the original design was so over the top to have that capacity in reserve but poor in that its 'over designed' for its original intent. The WRX/Sti is a starting point for a WRC rally car, no more, no less. It could be a pig to drive with completely the wrong type of suspwnsion set up but so long as it sold sufficiently they could start over pretty much with the WRC version and win stage rallies. The original Impreza Trubo, way bakc whne was pretty much the faster car in day to day conditions known. It was a quick as a C2 with better visibility etc etc. It has been redesigned each time to get faster and faster. Over here there are now a couple of special editions avaliable from Prodrive, who run the WRC team which make my eyes water, 300+ hp, 0-60 4.6 secs with handling to match in a £27K car and more to come. But its not intended to go on the track....so it would not be 'fair to compare'. Anyway I'd prefer to drive my early 911 than my quicker Audi S2 Avant...its all about feel and fun. |
MFAFF, true the WRX/Sti is not really focused on the track… It just came up in conversation that on the track an old (warmed over) 911 was no match for a stock WRX/Sti. In my opinion (and very limited experience) they seem pretty evenly matched. They both seem capable of relatively quick lap times. This is impressive for cars that are 20-30 years old… and also impressive for relatively cheap stock cars.
I also agree that it's all about fun, I loooove driving my 911 on the track (and tinkering with it in between). Used to love driving my WRX too but never thought to take it on the track, doh! |
One thing I like about the dash is I can get behind it easily and spin the speedo so I can see up to 200km/hr through the steering wheel… oh hang on, the fact I can't see above 150 'cos the wheel is in the way isn't a feature is it ;)
