Fuel Pump Relay

Is there a difference in a red fuel pump relay and a regular black relay? My fuel pump rus all the time when the key is on-not running. It is flooding the engine BAD! It is a 76 911 2.7. Any Ideas? Paul

The red relay has a noise suppression diode across the relay coil ... but a black relay such as the horn relay can be used temporarily for troubleshooting!

Pump should only run when the engine is turning over (starter) or running. Look for an unplugged air flow switch on the front (side of engine against the firewall) of the air box; plug it in. You may also have a sticking air meter plate/fuel distributor plunger. Fuel pump should have a red relay but this doesn't affect your problem.

The fuel pump can run without flow through the injectors on a CIS system. In fact that is how it is supposed to work. The fuel is flowing to the injectors because the control arm is up slightly. Likely the mixture control screw is turned slightly too rich, causing fuel flow. Or the arm is not returning full down properly.
Check the arm and round plate for freedom of movement. If free, pull one injector. Put it in a glass jar or bottle. Have someone briefly turn on the ignition. If the injector is flowing with out cranking, turn the mixture control screw CCW 1/4 turn. Don't go wacko turning the screw. A little goes a long ways. Try up to one full turn in 1/4 turn increments, CCW. Keep track of how many turns, in case this does not solve the problem.
I had the same problem a couple years ago. Backing off the mixture screw was the fix for me when I was running CIS.
Run Webers now, a whole new set of "opportunities"
Good luck,
