Interesting... My guess would be that it was used to relocate the oil filter in conjuction with a different oil tank. If you search the Pelican catalog for 916 107 242 you get: Search Results No real description but $500 price tag. Based on the part number probably a specialty 916 part.
If you're not familiar with the 916, here's a short description: 916

Ya, but aren't 916 trans numbers for the 915 with the flipped ring and pinion gear to work in the 914-6 and mid engine race cars? Also aren't 916 engine numbers for the prototype four cam six cylinder engine. Isn't there anyone out there with a 914 parts book that could look this up?

That looks like an oil filter console for a 72 911. Though it is one without the thermostat for an external oil cooler.
I didn't look up the PN, but I'm sure that is correct.

You can't always tell from that raw casting number ... which exact part it ended up finished as!
That part is definitely designed for a PC-260 or OC-54 oil filter with the 1" threads! The cap 916.101.175.00 fitted instead of thermopstat would seem to nail it as a 1972 911T/E console! 1972 T/E oil filter console ... 916.107.028.01 1972 911S oil filter console ... 916.107.028.00
