A little help from across the pond? Need Euro/ROW rear tow hook plug for 86 930.

O.K. guys - this is a hard part to find in the U.S. I have been trying on and off for the last year since my plug mysteriously disappeared. At first I thought it fell out, even though they are a real snug fit. After finding out how hard it is to find one, my guess is someone in the same boat as I am now just took mine. In any case, I would be much obliged if someone in the land of ROW spec Porsches could help me source a replacement. Here is the hole to be plugged and the beauty you would be helping out:

Thanks in advance -

Bill

Bill, If you have no joy sourcing a genuine plug then go to a Sears Hardware or Lowes and look at the plastic, nylon or rubber plugs. I'll bet you can find a good looking alternateive. (Have you tried Stoddarts?)

The part number is 999.703.181.40. Pelican lists it for $1.50, although for a part this small it might just be easier to order locally from the dealer.

Chris - I guess I should have added that I did order the tow hook plug from Pelican only to find that the U.S. version is different than the ROW version (I presume due to the different size rear bumperettes). I have spoken to several dealers and even a Porsche parts distributor in Belgium with no success as of yet. I have also bought maybe 5-6 different generic plugs at hardware stores and none of the fit.

Rick - thanks for the link - I have tried every style of plug listed on that site to no avail. This is why I am venturing that my plug may not have just fallen off on its own.

I'd imagine that any UK Porsche dealer can take card payment over the phone and send it to you. Picking one at random:
http://www2.uk.porsche.com/eastlondon/

There's an email address listed on that page.

If there's any problem, let me know.

Ben

OK, may be very tough to get. How about a metric / slotless carriage bolt painted black. Screw it in with some low-hold Loctite and it should be secure.

Other than that a visit to a machine shop may be in order.

Anyone have the Euro part #?

I got that part number from the ROW list. Have you ckecked this part number against the part you received from Pelican? I didn't think that US cars even had a provision for the tow hook.

Exactly - and I certainly do not like driving around with my hole exposed like that - you never know what will ened up in there - could cause unwanted corrosion -

when i punched in the 999 703 181 40 number into my price list, it shows this is the new number that supercedes part # 944 505 327 01 .
so, i went into the bumper page for the 944s and it does show the plug with the 999.... number as the tow hook plug for the front bumper. but, it shows it for 944's with option M058 (impact absorbers front and rear) ...not sure what that is all about.

So, you might want to see if anyone has the 944 505 327 01 part as old stock. Or, scour the wrecking yards for a 944 front bumper with the proper plug.

good luck,

max

EDIT: after a bit more searching, it appears that the M058 option code is for the ROW bumper. looks like the regular bumper, not turbo.(USA/Canada is M036)
So, your search may have to be 'across the pond' after all

Thanks for the help Max - maybe the people at the U.K. Porsche dealer I e-mailed will take pity on me and waste their time to send out a $2 part.

Hey Guys - thanks for all the help. A gentleman named Mark Evans responded from the U.K. dealer suggested by Ben above and offered to send one out to me free of charge. So apparently the U.K. Porsche dealers are a bit more helpful than the standard U.S. fare.

Now for those needing butt plugs, I suggest a search on google - should get some interesting results.

Bill
