Lower cost alternates for high power alternators?
I'm planning on putting an amp/sub in my 911 -- I drive it on my long commute a couple days a week during the summer and I need tunes! And I just can't hear the Eclipse head unit over the engine, especially when I've got earplugs in
![]() So the amp I have handy to put in the car is a Diamond Audio D7104... a 4x100 amp that can at peak draw 65-70 amps. I have to admit I don't know what the stock alternator puts out, but I'm guessing its around that. I noticed Pelican sells a $550 ![]() I'm not going to be boomin' or anything, btu I don't want to worry about the alternator keeping up with the draw on the battery.

I refuse to mention a rebuilt 95amp only because you might go booming past me some time, I get enough booming from the ricers.

I would be almost certain that the 95 amp alternator won't fit your fan housing since it wouldn't fit in my '73 911's fan housing. But if you insist on trying I can make you a deal on a 95 amp alternator that is almost new........

Still looking at options, and Pelican says it fits all models of 911...? On a side note, does anyone know what the stock is on a '68? I've been told 55 amp, but a couple people told me it was 35. When I add up lights, etc, 35 doesn't make sense to me. Can it possibly be that low?

I have to lean over and scream at my passengers for them to hear me over the engine/exhaust anyway. Music will have to be louder.
![]() Seriously, though, just looking at alternatives for when it turns out to be a problem. Switching to HIDs helped some, as they draw half the power as the stock headlights.

If you convert to the later alternator you will have to find a fan shroud that fits. Try a 4R casting number or later for a Carrera Alternator. I've never seen that 95 amp australian thing.
Also, you should probably upgrade the primary wires going from the alternator to the starter, and do something about the wires going from the B+ to the engine compartment. 68's don't have a 14 pin connector, right? So you need a way to get the juice from the uprated alternator to the car's main bus without cooking any 36-year-old wires. You are probably going to wire the amp and head unit directly to the battery, so make sure your cable connections are nice and tight all the way to the front of the car. 68's have a single battery, you might consider upgrading that also.
