Red light on convertible dash

is suppose to go out when the top goes completely down.

Mine doesn't go out no matter how long I hold it in for. Any ideas? Other than that, the top works perfectly.

Turbolook,

My 86 does that everyonce in a while when the top is up. I would say that 99% of the time when I start the car the light stays on for a second, then goes off. Every once in a while though it does stay on and I have to turn the car off, open the top a little then close it. That always fixes it. I am guessing that there is some sort of switch or electrical connection that tells the light it is either completley up or down. I think you might need to buy one of the shop manuals and trace where the wires that lead into the light come from.

Sorry I could not be of more help, that would be really annoying, that damn little light is really bright, especially at night.

I purchased my cab knowing one of the motors was not working. The PO removed linkage from the left and right hand side and showed me manually how to put up and down the top. No big deal. Except for the red light that is "always" on. I hardly drive it at night so I don't notice it.

I replace the rear speakers and while I had the rear quarter panel removed, I reviewed the motor for the top. Pretty basic setup. It had a start and stop armature that clicks on and off for the start and stop of the top. I'm would guess that the contact for the light would be nearby. Possibly oxidation or intermitent gap is the culprit. Sorry, I can't tell you which side the sensor would be on.

It looks to me like there are a couple of switches in the cab top mechanism...

Part 17 on the diagram (911 613 071 00) is described as a microswitch - it looks like a likely suspect to me. It's the only sensor-like thing there seems to be in the area.

Hope this helps!

I will look near the headliner when I get home tonight for a switch. But I agree, you might want to take the two inner parts that cover teh motors off and take a look and see if you can see any switches. Something might have moved jsut a little bit.

Can someone that has the CD that this diagram came from above give me the part number for number 2. It is the part that cable goes into.

I have it taken apart at it has a BMW logo stamped onto it and BMW part number.

Thanks,

Bill

I am not sure if the switches are the same, but I can tell you what I have noticed about my '92 Cab switches. (as best as I have been able to disern).

There are two micro switches up in my Headliner bar that connects above the windshield. There are also two switches on the round transmissions behind the rear seating area quarter pannel covers. Near the rear side speakers. The motor, which on mine is located at the back of the rear seating, controls these transmissions by a cable from the motor to the transmissions.

I think one of the transmission micro switches controls when the top is completely up and turns off the locking motor and/or light, and the other transmission micro switch turns off the raising/lowering motor and/or light when the top is lowered.

I think, but just my guess, that one of the switches on your transmission is either failing, or is not aligned properly anymore, and is leaving the light on even though the top is completely down.

I too have converted to manual operation, using only the locking electric motors at the windshield. It seems faster to do, and I had heard stories of the tops coming out of alignment and snaping some of the support bars. But I haven't gotten around to solving the light always on problem.

Good luck,

Ed
