So I've been slumming around...

Alright I admit it, I have been hanging out at VWVortex, checking out the R32's (can't afford the new Porsche of my dreams, so I'll settle for lesser albeit impressive German engineering) Anyway, there's this exhaust issue involving a vacuum motor opening a flap above so many RPM's and disabling it for more power on the low end (imagine the audacity of those guys trying to improve on stock German cars) So someone suggests a cabin mounted switch to control it, and then someone else mentions a kit available from Porsche for the 996. I've never heard of any factory kit for mounting a switch that would open the exhaust up, but maybe I was asleep for that discussion. Anyone ever hear of this? (I mean I realize that everything on the internet is ALWAYS true, right?)

Yamaha and some other motorcycle companies do that for in-line four's. I actually thought about doing that to an SC with a solenoid valve (or even a manual flapper). Not fully closed, but restricting. A dyno would be nice to tune it. Suzuki actually does it ont he intake side too!

Vacuum opening should not be a big deal, but my little brain has not stdied up on the 996...so your question ..still needs an answer.

I totally got the principle, but it seems very un-Porsche like to give the driver that kind of control, and even more aftermarket to defeat such a silly noise control, or emission issue. Know what I mean?

I understand that it exists, but not from the factory, right?

i am not totally up to date on the 996s by any means, but here is my understanding:
On early 996s, you had to get it from the tequipment dept. at the dealer, as a factory add on.
Later, it was made an option; orderable on a new car. The later version supposedly has a slightly larger by-pass pipe.
I am not sure of the option code.
