Mating trans to engine.
Trans is done. Is there a special trick to getting the clutch fork back on the throwout bearing when re-mating to the engine?
I have 101 Projects but can't seem to find the tip I need. Thanks for the assistance. 1981 Euro SC |
If everything is out of the car you can watch the guide fork through the hole in the upper part of the bell housing. If the tranny is still in the car (which I doubt since you worked on it) the "trick" is to take it out first.

No special trick but I had a bit of a struggle with it. Of course the tranny was in the car and the engine was sitting on a jack.
You need to pull the throw out fork away from the tranny at about a 45 degree angle or so, then carefully wiggle the tranny and engine together making sure the fork is engaged. if it is on too far they won't go together. If it is not engaged it will flop around. If it is engaged correctly there will be just a little tiny bit of slop in it. You did use a clutch alignment tool or a similar device, right? |
I didn't touch the clutch. Simply removed trans from engine. I suspected the procedure was simple. Gotta love German engineering! Sometimes I think they made it stupid simple to mess with DIY'ers.
thanks gentlemen |
When doing mine we used a long screwdriver through the view hole to help ensure the fork moved as the tranny was pushed toward the engine.
