Is this a fuel pump problem?

About 5 miles from house Friday the car just dies. No generator light, all power is still on. Pulled over and checked for the usual suspects. The fuel pump was silent. We had the car flatbedded home, fuel pump was still silent but relay was definately clicking. I should have crawled underneath and checked for voltage at the pump but I didn't because it was late. Anyway, the next morning the fuel pump came back on and the car started. I'm inclined to think that the pump has gone bad or is going bad. It's pretty noisy, but it always has been. It appears to be original, so it's 115k miles and 25 years old. All the wires looked good. Am I right?

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

you're not going to know for sure till you hook up another one,
but if it has volts and doesn't sing , then it's busted...

My car droped dead on the way to work one day. The ignition system checked out ok. My problem was no fuel pressure and the fuel pump fuse and relay were good. I had to Take a close look at the wiring on the fuse block in the trunk to find the problem. I had a wire on the fuel pump circuit to the fuse block become overheated and created a high resistance. I cut the wire back and cleaned the contact on the fuse block. Fixed the problem and was only 1hour late for work.
