ok, my car moved under its own power for the first time since probably the mid eighty's....but it wasnt pretty.... the webbers are jetted pretty close to recomendations (except for i have f26 instead of f3 emulsion tubes. is this ok?) the engine idles well but upon opening the throttle i get heavy popping/small flames out the carbs, it is worse on the passenger side carb. i cleaned the internal passeges, replaced the accel.pump gaskets/diaphragm, used new pilots, set idle mix to 1.5 turns out and air bypass full in.

i know i need to use a airflow meter to balance the carbs but i believe i have a lean condition to resolve before i am ready for that step. does any one have any tips or leads for a first time webber tweeker???

P.S. the 2.4e(911/52) engine is a known good.... i test drove it in the P.O. s car with his webbers and its current msd6/crane optical trigger ignition setup. i believe the ignition setup/timing is correct. but these webbers have been sitting quite awhile.......any help would be great, thanks

any carb that sits for years can develop corrosion inside. they should be disassembled and inspected for crusty white powder in the float bowls and jet passages, or black varnish from old gas. the original idle jets were pretty small, and will cause the spit and pop that you have. you need 0.55 jets, so check the number on them, and better yet, use a jet gauge, because a lot of them have been drilled and of course still have the original number on them.

Those guys will spit and pop a 'little' when warming up. If it continues more than a few minutes, start cracking the mixtures a quarter turn 'til you get a reasonably smooth idle, then go through the mixture setup found all over this board. JW is dead on, clean those babys up good. It doen't take much to restrict the idle jets. Pull them (easy) and blow them out.

Sounds like you really like this car a lot. I'd say send the carbs to Weber USA for a full overhaul and they can make them work better than new. Good luck.

I dont know everything you have done to is so this suggetion may be redundent.

Start at the begining, Adjust the valves, my webers are allways easier to tune on freshly adjusted valves. Second get the idle set and set the timing.

If those are both check marks in the good column then get a rebuild kit for the carbs tear them down clean the snot out of them. Chances are if they sat a long time there is sediment or crap inside that can ball you up.

the poping and flames sounds to me like the exhaust valves may not be closed all the way when they should be. I am betting on valve adjustment.

looks like JW nailed it, second session of cleaning the air bypass and mixture screws took care of the carb popping. i would be ready to sync them but it looks like my throttle shafts are leaking a little...not much but a squirt of carb cleaner on the end pivot changes my idle. how serious is this? will i be able to sync the carbs? is there another fix besides rebuilding them? any input on the f26 emulsion tubes? thanks, mike
