70T Bent Cross member- options?
Whilst removing the heat exchangers ( without a single broken stud ! ), I was looking forward under the car and noticed something unfriendly.
I knew the PO had wrecked the front right ( i didn't know it when I bought it... ) . Now I see why my car veers to the right when I apply and let off the brakes. I read some posts, but not much here about bent x-members. I read where someone mentioned "later-style" aluminum ? My question is this, do I just go the the fs board and ask for one that fits my car, or ask for a later style model that bolts right up? I mean, bent can't be good, right? Michael ![]()

Not too hard to replace. You can use any crossmember from '69 to '89.
I have one from my '73 for sale. You have a PM. If the member is bent, I would carefully inspect the tub and pickup points for bendage.

The AL Xmember saves several pounds in about the least important area to save wt. (low on the car and in front). But it is stiffer than the older steel types and is cheap. Since you are going to do the work, I would upgrade. When I did this, I used all new hardware (super-imp. area & steel to Al contact). You will also need the later protection plate or you can drill some holes in the old one.
Nice color car. |
