RSR project... the games begin...
Ok gang, need some advice. I'm starting the process of finding a car for my RSR project. Basically, the look of Jack's car (early hood).
Do I... Buy a galvinized car and back date... Or, look for a "low rust" early car to frankenstien. I don't want to buy a currently done RSR, unless I can get a decent roller. I'd prefer to start with a fully functional car and go from there... Budget wise, I'm not too sure yet. But considering all the mods, as cheap as is reasonable. The intention is a street legal, track car. 3.6 (eventually) bla... bla... bla... Any thoughts???:D |
Why find a fully functional car? Just look for a rust-free shell, and save yourself the cost of the rest of the car. Seems like you'd be replacing engine, tranny, wheels, and interior anyway.

I think the best car to start with would be a C2 with the 3.6 and the coil- overs to start with--not to mention all the other modern improvements made to those model years. Then backdate the body to your liking.

I'd look for a later Carrera 3.2 w/G50 that's sound mechanically, but has a battered body and interior. You can use the drivetrain and put the body together at the same time, gut the interior and add a roll bar. This way, the initial outlay won't have to be more than $25-28K, and then you can upgrade to 3.6 later...

Excellence, october 1999 had an article comparing a genuine 1973 RSR and a 1992 Carrera 2 backdated andrebuild to RSR.

If you backdate, the one downside is that you can't run deep Fuchs.

The hubs were moved further out after 1989. You could have Fuchs made, but the centers wouldn't be set in as deep. I'm pretty sure stock Fuchs wouldn't work at all.

Yes, I did. I was on the fence (and still am). Silver looks great, is very German, and looks clean even when it's dirty.

BB II in (936) silver metallic is my current dream car. Silver and Black are the only two colors for a car like that.

I would look for a clean tub, you are going to strip it and discard most of the parts anyway.

Ah, many challenges ahead. I like the idea of the newer chassis that's been banged up with a clean G50... One of the reasons I was thinking of a good car to start is so I could do what Jack did and sell off stuff to offset cost. Especially the motor.
My intentions are to do just what Jack has done basically and do fiberglass everything that can be done. Super light, crazy quick (hopefully). Just a really fun car. Given this is this type of project, would a salvage titled car be a good potential start point? Hank at GTRacing just purchased an SC and is RSRing it for his wife. He is going to be posting the methodology of the rebuild on his web site. I think I want to have the capability of running the wide Fuch's. I had never seen a set personally. Hank has a set for his car, and they are simply one of the coolest looking sets of wheels I have ever seen. Hopefully someone will continue to make a decent tire for them... Jack... If you value a G50 that much(I don't) then put one in, or a 6spd. When you are starting from a bare tub it's not that big a deal.

It's my understanding that the 915 isn't strong enough for a future 3.6. What are you running currently? I happen to really like the 915, mine has been great. Especially now that I have my shifter/coupler totally sorted. |
I have a 915/67 in front of my 300+ hp 3.8, I used a mg. 915/44 for yrs. in front of a 964 3.6. Never a problem.
The only trans that I would go out of my way for over a late 915 is a G50/21 993RS 6spd. |

For my project, I bought a bare SC coupe tub that was stripped for parts after flood damage. This has worked well for my particular needs. Although there were some minor issues resulting from carelessness during the dismanteling phase of this car's life.
