Cad Plating in a Can!

I tried some Eastwood "Golden Cad" today. Basically, a special spray paint that supposedly duplicates OEM zinc dichromate plating. It's actually not bad - a little too 'gold' but I'm still experimenting with it. I've also got some Red Zinc and Green Zinc tint that goes over the Golden Cad base. Some of my original cad plating looks like it has a very slight red tint?

I just did the red tint. Just a very, very light random spray. I think it looks pretty good. As for durability - probably no more than any other paint .....

As for the gold base, I think I should have done fewer coats. It seemed to get more and more 'gold' with each layer. I'm doing the coil bracket next, so we'll see how that looks .....

Try shooting it side by side with some semi gloss clear to dilute it on something that doesn't matter. If that works for you, empty the can into a container and use an air brush or detail gun to apply a watered down version.

Thanks Milt - I may give that a try.

I used to visit the "home machinest" web sites. Some of them have a lot of information about "home plating".

I remember one of them had a virtual rainbow of colors that could be plated onto steel parts. etc.

You might do a little searching on the web for more information about cad plating that could actually be done "at home"
