Question Coil wire ???

The wires on the engine harness for the ignition coil come shielded from the factory. Not the coil to distribuor wire. Is this necessary since the coil is already grounded? Can I replace with a non-shielded wire?

to my understanding , the wire harness isn't really shielded, its just taped to keep things organized. looks like normal wire to me..
what you want shielded is your plug wires, since those will make nice sparks in the dark if not shielded> think magnecor

maybe someone knows more about it, dunno ... just guessing here

I have shielded plug wires (after all the rumors on here, I bought a set of factory wires). The wires in the harness have a stainless braiding around the inner-core wire. I am just curious how important this is.

The braiding on the high voltage wires from the coil to the distributor and from the distributor to the sparkplug boots apparently was an attempt to fix the blown air box problem (it didn't work) and therefore isn't needed. When I replaced my old stock plug wires on my '76 three years ago I used to a set of regular (non-braided) Beru's and there have been essentially no backfires as opposed to a couple per month before. Properly adjusted valves and correct ignition point dwell are far more inportant. The braiding on the engine harness portion between the engine mounted components and the CDI box is important and helps ensure a good ground path between these parts. Jim

Jim, I should have figured that you would be the one to answer my question. Again thanks.

Jim is correct on the CIS issues. I did research and found the same thing.

I rebuilt my CDI to coil hareness with regular old wire (non-sheilded) and it works fine.
