Carrera cam on a 1989 930

I talked to the engine rebuilder in my Porsche shop. He mentioned if you put a "Carrera cam" in a 1989 930 along with after market exhaust to shorten the turbo exhaust route, you can increase the hps to 300+ with no turbo lag? What is "Carrera cam"? Is he right about the result?

He probably means the SC cam, this is a common mod to help to increase the low down, off boost performance in the 930.
The 964 cam is also used but I think this works best in the mid and upper range.
It will take more than the exhaust and cam to eliminate turbo lag completely, i.e. quick spool turbo, headers etc.

The SC cam has almost zero over lap (CIS does not like the reversion impulses up the intake) so no turbo boost is blown out the exhaust before the valve closes. This is similar to how modern High Performance turbo cams are designed. I dont know much about Turbos but I would think the SC cam would be better than the Carrera or 964 cam - could be wrong though? I believe the later cams both have a little over lap.

The SC and Carrera Cams are exactly the same.

Correct, the only difference in SC and Carrera cam timing is how they are indexed. The early US model SC's used the Carrera 3.0 timing. Post US 80 models advanced the timing a bit (Like Euro models from 78-80), 81-83 Euro SC's reverted to Carrera 3.0 timing and the 3.2's just split the difference.
