Clicking from dash (Varies with wheel speed)?

Hi guys,

I had my 1980SC out for a pre-track weekend test drive and notice a clicking noise coming from behind the dash that varied with the speed of the car. I thought bearing at first, but this is not a bearing noise. Any ideas?

Speedo?

Thanks,

Speedo cable would my guess. Before taking it out and re-routing it and lubing it, try turning the gauge clockwise. Does the needle bounce? Could also be the plastic odometer gears inside which have been known to go bad.

I bet it is your o2 sencor counter. Do a search here for O2 sensor or oxygen sensor. It is a little black box that counts its way down from 30,000 mile telling you it is time to change your 02 sensor (light on dash goes on). You can tape up the wires and it will not count anymore or click anymore! It is located behind your speedo or tac, I forget which one.

John 70t, 80 SC=electronic speedo= no cable.
I will bet that it is the counter for the Oxygen Sensor light.
Do a search on what it is for and how to disable it.
My car made the exact same ticking sound, dependant on speed.

Max is on target!
It's the O2 milage counter. Easily silenced.

BTW, Max....All your friends up North are hoping to see you again at this years SCWDP Round-Up.....

Pull your spedo out, look down and to the right, you will see the small black box. I cut the brown wire on my car, and no more clicking sound.
Good luck.

I agree that it is likely the O2 counter. My 81 SC does it too.

An easy way to check is to listen for the clicking, and then with the clicking occuring, turn off the ignition.... (be careful of the steering wheel lock!!) If it is the O2 counter, it will stop.

From the posts, it seems like the preferred way to disable it is to cut the brown (ground) wire to the 'little black box' located in the dash.

You guys were on target, I pulled the Speedo last night and pressed the reset button and the noise it made while resetting was similar. I will know for sure when I drive it on Friday on my way to Mid-Ohio. I decided to merely reset it as I only drive about 2-3K miles per year and it will be over ten years until I need to deal with it again (30K mile intervals per the owners manual).

Interestingly, my light for the Ox sensor was burned out so that explains why the light wasn't on also.

THanks again for the help.

If it's not a continous clicking and more like a plastic popping it's the plastic on the gauge face popping. Just does it with temp. change.
Just a common thing with p-cars.

Does this appy to 3.2's as well? I'm been hearing an occasional pop in the dash area.
