Wire Harness Removal
I am disassembling my Porsche 911 and am attempting to remove the wiring harness to prepare the body for a sand blast or chemical drop. Does anyone have any tricks or ideas other than cutting them to remove this big pile of wires from that little hole? The pull on one end and pray method has been giving me some trouble.
Thanks, Rich |

Use motor oil as a lubricant on all the rubber fittings where they go through the body sheetmetal. Make sure you take detailed photos of where everything goes. And I mean detailed, six months from now when you are putting her back together it will be impossible to remember what goes where. Make extensive notes, you cannot depend on the factory wiring diagram to give you the orientation of every wire. EVERYTHING must be disconnected, if you have the page from the factory spare parts manual there is a silhouette drawing of the wire harness showing every wire and connection, so you can be sure to get them all.
What year car, are you planning on doing Concours? This will dictate what you do with the harness once it's out.

I rewired a 914 a while back. I pulled the entire dash assembly out in one chunk and used light lubricant on the tunnel so the grommets would come through. A wire fish tape helps alot too. He's right on the notes, you can make enough. next take your time and go slow.

I am disassebling a 1976 911S. I have disconnected all the wires and labeled both the wires and the electrical untis that they connect to. A timely process indeed. I am not planning on making it into a concours car just hopefully a fun, fast car.

There are no wires that need to be cut to remove the harness. There will be spade contacts that can be disconnected. You will end up with 3 or 4 wire harness bundles once they are disconnected from each other. There are also wired pins on connectors that will need to be removed so the wires can be pulled through a hole. I did not need to lubricate any of the harness to remove from the chassis. I also don't expect to have to lubricate the harness bundles to reinstall. Take lots of before photos and label everything you can as you go along.
